Product Description
A pair of rather spiffing wristlets / fingerless gloves / thingies. Ideal for tinkering with flying machines, adjusting one’s fob watch in the cold and for looking downright steam-punkerishly magnificent at all times.
Approx. 50g Aran or worsted weight yarn 5mm needles Trim & buttons
These can be adapted with different types of wool. I made these on straight needles and seamed them but they can be made in the round as the buttons are decorative rather than functional. The lace is sewn on by hand. Sewing skills not up to much? Not a problem! Plenty of photos to help, and this is a very forgiving pattern.
Ultrasonic Belch O'Meters Fingerless Gloves by Betty & Jack
Project Overview
The Ultrasonic Belch O'Meters are a pair of knitted wristlets and fingerless gloves designed with steampunk aesthetics in mind. These intermediate-level knitting projects are ideal for crafters looking to create practical yet decorative hand wear suitable for cold-weather tinkering, adjusting accessories, or achieving a distinctive steampunk-inspired appearance.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a pair of fingerless gloves or wristlets—hand coverings that leave the fingers exposed while providing warmth and coverage to the wrists and back of the hand. The design is versatile and can be adapted for various aesthetic styles, from steampunk to circus-themed or princess-inspired variations depending on yarn color and embellishment choices.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Flat knitting on straight needles with seaming (as originally designed)
- Optional adaptation to circular needles for knitting in the round
- Gauge flexibility—the pattern notes that gauge is not critically important, though adjustments to needle size may be necessary for very tight or very loose knitters
- Seaming techniques to join pieces together
Stitches and Construction Details
While specific stitch patterns are not detailed in the provided content, the construction involves basic knitting fundamentals suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern accommodates different needle techniques, allowing knitters to choose between traditional straight needle construction with seaming or circular needle methods for seamless in-the-round knitting.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Yarn: Approximately 50 grams of Aran or worsted weight yarn is required. The pattern specifically mentions Wool of the Andes for the brown versions shown in photographs and Cascade 220 for the red and grey variations, demonstrating the pattern's compatibility with quality wool yarns in this weight category.
Needles: 5mm needles are recommended. The designer used straight needles for the original design, though the pattern explicitly offers guidance for adapting the project to circular needles for those preferring to knit in the round.
Additional Materials: The wristlets are embellished with stretch lace trim (approximately 1 metre, though non-stretch lace is also suitable as demonstrated in the red versions), six buttons in assorted styles and sizes, and shirring elastic secured with a sewing needle for functional finishing.
Customization and Adaptation Options
The Ultrasonic Belch O'Meters pattern encourages creative customization. Knitters can experiment with different yarn types and colors—such as red, white, and black combinations for a circus aesthetic, or soft yarns paired with beads for a princess-inspired look. Button selection is flexible, allowing for assorted styles and sizes to enhance the overall design aesthetic.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle projects involving seaming, embellishment application, and minor gauge adjustments.
