U-KNIT-Y Hat: A Statement in Double-Knitting
What Is Being Made
The U-KNIT-Y hat is a knitted statement piece designed by handmade by smine, created as a meaningful response to promote inclusivity within the fibre arts community. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished hat that showcases vibrant Pride flag rainbow colours alongside neutral grey shades, making it both a functional accessory and a visual declaration of values.
Design Purpose and Inspiration
This design emerged from a collaborative dinner with students of renowned UK-based knitting designer and teacher Sockmatician (Nathan Taylor) during his New Zealand tour in September 2018. The hat was conceived as a creative response to address negativity within the fibre community, transforming personal conversation into purposeful craft.
Knitting Techniques
Double-knitting is the primary technique featured in this pattern. Double-knitting is an advanced colourwork method that creates a reversible fabric with two distinct sides, allowing for intricate pattern work using two colours per row. This technique produces a thicker, more structured fabric than single-layer knitting and is ideal for creating bold, graphic designs that are equally beautiful from both sides.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches worked in the double-knitting method. This technique involves working with two colours simultaneously, carrying yarn floats and managing tension across colour changes to create seamless pattern integration. The reversible nature of double-knitting means both the interior and exterior of the finished hat display the colourwork design.
