Twisted Trellis Hat by Sally Yanita

What is Being Made

The Twisted Trellis Hat is a knitted hat designed by Sally Yanita, available in six different sizes to fit various head circumferences. This pattern accommodates preemie (25 cm / 10"), baby (35 cm / 14"), toddler (40 cm / 16"), child (45 cm / 18"), adult female (50 cm / 20"), and adult male (56 cm / 22½") sizes. The hat depth varies by size category, with preemie and baby sizes measuring 15 cm (6") deep, toddler and child sizes at 20 cm (8") deep, and adult sizes at 25 cm (10") deep. The finished hat shown in the pattern features a sophisticated twisted trellis stitch pattern and is demonstrated in grey and pink colorways.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental knitting techniques. The pattern utilizes cable work with the use of a cable needle to create the twisted trellis texture that gives the hat its distinctive visual appeal. The hat is constructed using the in-the-round method, worked on circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs) to create a seamless, tubular fabric. Stitch markers are used throughout the pattern to help track pattern repeats and construction progress. The finished hat is blocked to achieve proper gauge and finished dimensions, which helps set the twisted stitch pattern and ensures consistent fit across all size options.

Stitches Used

The Twisted Trellis Hat features a P2, K2 ribbing pattern as its primary stitch structure. This ribbing—alternating two purl stitches with two knit stitches—creates vertical columns of texture that provide elasticity and a refined appearance. The ribbing is worked after blocking to achieve the specified gauge of 22 stitches and 24 rows over a 10 cm (4") square. Cable stitches are incorporated to create the twisted trellis design element, requiring the use of a cable needle to manipulate stitches and form the characteristic twisted texture throughout the hat.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Twisted Trellis Hat is designed for DK weight yarn, requiring approximately 100 grams of yarn with a yardage of 250 meters to complete a project. The pattern sample shown is knitted in Mochi milk cotton, a specialty yarn with a weight per inch (WPI) of 13, which provides a smooth, drape-friendly fabric suitable for the twisted trellis stitch pattern. Knitters should use 5.50 mm (US 9) needles or adjust needle size as needed to obtain the proper gauge of 22 stitches and 24 rows per 10 cm (4") square in the P2, K2 ribbing. An 8-inch circular needle or set of double-pointed needles (DPNs) is required for in-the-round construction. Additional tools include a cable needle for executing cable stitches, stitch markers to track pattern repeats, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and finishing.
