Twisted Meadow Socks by Katya Frankel

What is Being Made

Twisted Meadow is an intermediate-level knitted sock pattern designed by Katya Frankel. These socks are constructed from the toe upward in the round, creating a seamless garment that fits foot circumferences of 23.5cm/9.25in or 26.5cm/10.5in, with an actual unstretched sock circumference of 21cm/8.25in or 24cm/9.5in respectively. The pattern produces a classic sock suitable for everyday wear with thoughtful shaping and structural detail.

Techniques Used

The Twisted Meadow socks employ several key knitting techniques that define their construction and visual interest:

  • Toe-Up Construction: The socks are worked from the toe upward in the round, allowing for precise fit adjustments and the ability to knit until desired length before binding off at the calf.
  • Figure of 8 Cast On: This specialized cast-on method creates a closed toe with balanced tension, ideal for toe-up sock construction.
  • Gusset Increases: Strategic increases along the sides of the foot create room for the instep and ankle, shaping the sock to fit the contours of the leg.
  • Short Row Heels: This technique creates a reinforced heel cup by working back and forth over a subset of stitches before returning to working in the round, providing durability and comfort in a high-wear area.
  • Cabling: Decorative cable stitches add visual texture and interest to the sock design, elevating it beyond basic stockinette stitch.
  • Sewn Bind Off: The pattern recommends a Sewn Bind Off method for a stretchy, professional finish at the cuff that allows for comfortable wear.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for intermediate skill levels:

  • Knit (K): The basic knit stitch forms the foundation of the fabric.
  • Purl (P): Purl stitches are incorporated, likely within the cable patterns and stocking stitch sections.
  • Knit Two Together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used for shaping the sock.
  • Make One (M1): An increase worked by picking up the running thread before the next stitch and knitting into the back of it, used for gusset increases and other shaping.
  • Slip, Slip, Knit (Ssk): A left-leaning decrease created by slipping two stitches knitwise individually, passing them back to the left-hand needle, and knitting them together through the back of the loops.
  • Slip Stitch (Sl): Stitches are slipped purlwise unless otherwise specified, commonly used in cable work and shaping.
  • Stocking Stitch: The primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit and purl rows (or knit rounds when working in the round), produces the smooth, classic sock fabric.

Materials

The Twisted Meadow pattern is worked using circular needles appropriate for small-circumference knitting in the round. While specific yarn weight and fiber content details are not fully visible in the provided pattern excerpt, sock patterns typically call for fingering-weight yarn (approximately 400+ yards) worked on needles sized between US 0-2 (2.0-2.75mm) to achieve the tight gauge necessary for durable, well-fitting socks. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF format for easy reference during knitting.

Skill Level

Classified as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters are comfortable with stocking stitch, simple decreases and increases, and basic finishing techniques. The combination of toe-up construction, gusset shaping, short row heels, and cabling requires solid foundational skills and the ability to follow multi-step instructions, making it an excellent project for knitters looking to expand their sock-knitting repertoire beyond beginner patterns.
