Product Description
Twilight & Mist Shawl is a lightweight, lofty and soft accessory in a classic rectangular shape. The pattern features two simple reversible eyelet and lace stitch patterns that create an equally beautiful fabric on both sides of the shawl. It is knit sideways, allowing you to change colours of the yarn as you progress, making it a perfect pattern for a gradient yarn to show it off to its best advantage. The cast-on and bind-off edges of this shawl can be blocked either straight or in a pointy pattern, giving your shawl the new look after every wash and blocking.
Finished Measurements (approx): 14 x 60 inches (35 x 152 cm) - moderately blocked; 17 x 65 inches (43 x 165 cm) - blocked with wires and pins.
Gauge: 14 sts x 28 rows to 10cm/4in square
Twilight Mist Shawl by Alla Saenko
What Is Being Made
Twilight Mist is a lightweight, lofty, and soft rectangular shawl designed by Alla Saenko. This knitted accessory features a classic rectangular silhouette and is constructed by knitting sideways in alternating color stripes. The design offers versatility in finishing options, as the sawtooth edges can be blocked either straight or with pointed tips, allowing for different aesthetic presentations after each wash and blocking.
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create its elegant appearance. The shawl is worked sideways, which allows for the alternating color stripes to be incorporated seamlessly throughout the construction. The design incorporates eyelet and lace stitch patterns that are reversible, meaning both sides of the fabric display attractive stitch definition. Sawtooth edgings frame the perimeter of the shawl, adding visual interest and a refined finish. The lace patterns are designed to look attractive whether the finished shawl is blocked or left unblocked, providing flexibility in finishing techniques.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
Twilight Mist features two simple reversible eyelet and lace stitch patterns as its primary design elements. These stitch patterns work together to create the lightweight, airy fabric characteristic of lace shawls. The sawtooth edgings provide a decorative border that complements the lace work. The reversible nature of the stitch patterns means that both sides of the finished shawl will display attractive lacework, making this design particularly versatile.
Yarn and Materials
This design offers flexibility in yarn selection, accommodating different yarn weights and fiber combinations. Knitters can choose between two construction methods: knitting with a single strand of fingering or sock weight yarn, or holding two strands of different lace weight yarns together. One of the lace weight yarn options is specifically a lace mohair, which adds a rich, luxurious appearance to the finished shawl when used in the two-strand method. The 4-ply yarn weight classification provides guidance for yarn selection. Swatching with both stitch patterns used in the design and blocking the swatch is recommended to evaluate how your chosen yarn and needles will create the desired fabric appearance, though gauge is noted as not being very crucial for this project.
