Twelfth Knit is a doubly-thick cowl inspired by the brocade patterns of the Elizabethan Period and from a costume worn by actor Marc Rylance in his performance in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.

Worked entirely in the round, the outer colorwork pattern is worked first, followed by a purl round and a simple, inner colorwork pattern. The inner pattern is folded inward, and the two ends are sewn to each other.

What Is Being Made
Twelfth Knit is an advanced-level doubly-thick cowl designed by Mary Annarella, inspired by the ornate brocade patterns of the Elizabethan Period and a costume worn by actor Marc Rylance in a performance of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a luxurious, reversible cowl with finished measurements of 25 inches in circumference and 5¾ inches wide.
Construction Technique
The cowl is worked entirely in the round using a distinctive two-layer construction method. The outer colorwork pattern is knitted first, followed by a purl round that serves as a turning ridge. A simpler inner colorwork pattern is then worked on the same stitches. The inner pattern layer is folded inward along the purl round, and the two ends are sewn together to create the finished cowl. This technique produces a doubly-thick fabric with colorwork visible on both the exterior and interior surfaces.
Stitches and Colorwork
The pattern features stockinette stitch colorwork as the primary stitch structure. Two distinct colorwork patterns are incorporated: a more complex outer pattern and a simpler inner pattern. Materials and Gauge
This pattern requires one skein each of Main Color (MC) and Contrast Color yarn. Knitting needles in size 6 US (or the size needed to obtain proper gauge) are used to work the piece. The recommended gauge is 23 stitches and 25.5 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch colorwork pattern on size 6 needles.
