What is Being Made

Tunturia is a downloadable knitting pattern for a lace hat designed by independent designer Verena Cohrs. This beginner-friendly project creates a finished hat available in three sizes with circumferences of 37.25 cm (14.75"), 46.75 cm (18.5"), and 56 cm (22"), and lengths ranging from 18 cm (7") to 23 cm (9"). The hat is designed to be worn with 4–8 cm (1.75–3.25") of negative ease for an optimal fit.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This hat utilizes lace knitting as its primary stitch technique, worked from a chart pattern. The lace is constructed in the round using circular needles, creating an elegant openwork design. The pattern is suitable for beginners, making it an accessible introduction to lace knitting despite the delicate nature of the stitch work.

The hat is worked in the round on circular needles, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates seamless, professional results. The lace pattern is charted, providing clear visual guidance for stitch placement and yarn overs that create the openwork effect characteristic of lace knitting.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for The Fibre Co. Tundra, a bulky-weight yarn composed of 60% baby alpaca, 30% Merino wool, and 10% silk. This fiber blend provides warmth, softness, and subtle sheen. The yardage requirements are 75 metres (82 yards) for size 1, 90 metres (99 yards) for size 2, and 115 metres (126 yards) for size 3. The yarn shown in the pattern photograph is in the colorway Allium.

Needles and Tools

• 5.5 mm / US 9 circular needle with a cable length of at least 40 cm (16") for main knitting
• 5 mm / US 8 circular needle (one size smaller) with a cable length of at least 40 cm (16")
• Darning needle for weaving in ends
• Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats
• Tape measure for checking finished dimensions
• Blocking tools (optional) for finishing and shaping

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 15 stitches by 20 rounds over 10 by 10 cm (4 by 4 inches) when worked in the round using the chart pattern on the larger needle after blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished hat size.
