Product Description
The yarn for this top was created for me by Jamie of M1 Yarns. She combined my love of orange with my obsession with tunisian crochet. Thus the name Tunisian Desert, which is the colorway name as well.
This top is written for the intermediate tunisian crocheter. However, if you're a beginner with a some guts, go for it!
It's slightly cropped with tons of texture. It's breezy but not completely see through. The lighter your yarn, the more lacy it will be. Just two panels, seam and done!
The pattern is written to have 2-4" of positive ease, but easily adjusted to suit your needs.
Finished chest measurements: 32(36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64)"

What Is Being Made
The Tunisian Desert Top is a crochet garment designed as a wearable top constructed using the Tunisian crochet method. This intermediate-level project is worked in two seamed panels from the bottom up, with the back panel worked first, followed by the front panel which includes neckline shaping. The design offers 2-4 inches of ease across each size, allowing for comfortable fit customization.
Construction Method
This top uses a two-panel construction approach, meaning the back and front pieces are worked separately and then seamed together. The pattern is worked bottom-up, a common approach in crochet that allows for easier try-on and adjustments during the construction process. All rows feature a standard return pass, which is characteristic of Tunisian crochet technique, except where otherwise specified in the pattern instructions.
Tunisian Crochet Techniques
Tunisian crochet is a hybrid technique that combines elements of both crochet and knitting. This method involves working forward passes and return passes across rows of stitches. The Tunisian Desert Top employs this technique throughout, with the forward pass creating new loops on the hook and the return pass working off those loops in a single pass across the row. This creates a fabric with a distinctive appearance and drape that differs from traditional crochet.
Stitches Used
- Tunisian Simple Stitch (Tss) — The foundation stitch used in this pattern, worked in various combinations
- Tunisian Simple Stitch 2 Together (Tss2tog) — A decrease stitch that combines two stitches into one, used for shaping
- Yarn Over (Yo) — Creates decorative openings and lace elements throughout the fabric
The pattern features a repeating motif combining yarn overs with Tunisian simple stitch decreases, creating a textured, openwork design characteristic of the desert-inspired aesthetic.
Neckline Shaping
The front panel includes specific neckline shaping to create a finished neckline opening. This shaping is incorporated into the stitch pattern itself, allowing the neckline to be formed during the construction process rather than requiring additional finishing steps.
Sizing and Gauge
The pattern is designed with multiple sizes, each offering 2-4 inches of positive ease for comfortable wear. Proper gauge is essential for this project: 16 stitches by 11 rows equals 4 inches when blocked. If you cannot achieve the specified gauge, or if you need to adjust the size, the pattern recommends working to the finished measurements in multiples of 2 stitches to maintain pattern integrity. Adjustments should account for yardage requirements, as changing size will affect total yarn needed.
Materials
The Tunisian Desert Top is worked with DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that creates a drape suitable for a summer or layering top. You will need an appropriate crochet hook sized for DK yarn, typically in the range of US sizes E/4 (3.5mm) to F/5 (3.75mm), depending on your personal gauge and the specific yarn chosen. The pattern instructions emphasize maintaining consistent tension, particularly on forward passes, to achieve straight edges.
Construction Tips
The pattern includes helpful guidance for achieving professional results. To maintain straight edges, tighten the loop on your hook during the forward pass. When working edge stitches, ensure you go through two loops on the left edge stitch to maintain proper tension and finished appearance. These techniques are important for creating a polished final garment.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this project requires familiarity with Tunisian crochet techniques and the ability to follow pattern instructions with shaping elements. While not a beginner project, it is accessible to crocheters with some experience in basic crochet and an understanding of how to work Tunisian stitches.
