Tulip Stitch Headband by Bonnie Bay Crochet
Project Overview
The Tulip Stitch Headband is an easy beginner crochet project designed by Bonnie Barker of Bonnie Bay Crochet. This lightweight headband is perfect for spring and summer wear, working up quickly and offering both adult and child sizing options. The design features a decorative Tulip Stitch pattern that creates visual interest while remaining accessible to newer crocheters.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a fitted headband that can be customized for different sizes. The adult version measures approximately 20 inches long by 3 1/4 inches wide, while the child's version measures approximately 18 inches long by 3 1/4 inches wide. The headband is designed to sit comfortably on the head with a finished width that provides adequate coverage without being bulky.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Tulip Stitch Headband uses fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The primary stitches employed in this pattern include:
- Chain stitch (ch): Used to create the foundation of the headband with an initial chain of 21 stitches
- Single crochet (sc): A basic stitch that creates a tight, dense fabric
- Double crochet (dc): A taller stitch that adds height and drape to the fabric
- Tulip Stitch: The signature pattern stitch for this design, which creates clusters that form the distinctive tulip-like texture
The pattern also incorporates skip stitches to shape the design. The Tulip Stitch itself is the special stitch that defines this project, creating visual clusters that measure 4 clusters per 3 inches horizontally and 3 rows per 2 inches vertically.
Materials and Tools
This project requires minimal materials, making it an economical choice for crafters. The yarn specified is Cascade Yarns Fixation Splash, a DK weight yarn composed of 98.3% cotton and 1.7% spandex. One 50-gram ball (1.75 ounces, 100 yards/91.4 meters) is sufficient to complete the headband. The cotton-spandex blend provides breathability and stretch, ideal for a comfortable headband that maintains its shape.
A Size H crochet hook (5.00 mm) is used to work with the DK weight yarn. Additional notions include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and scissors for cutting yarn. The pattern notes that gauge is not critically important for this project since the headband is crocheted to the desired length rather than to specific stitch counts.
