Product Description
Originally designed for Reloved in 2017.
Upcycle an old tub chair with this cover made with a patchwork rainbow of stitch patterns.
Materials: DMC Petra No.3, three of each in - orange 5608, yellow 5742, green 5905, pale blue 5418, blue 5798, two of each in - red 5321, violet 53837.
The colours are changed for each block and used randomly to create a patchwork effect. Some blocks use two colours. In general, the colours were kept in rainbow order working from red to violet and back to red which is why only two each of red and violet were used.
The used tub chair came from a charity shop and had no labels. It is a standard size, measuring 70cm across the front at the bottom and 67cm down the back from the centre top.
The cover is designed to be a tight fit so that it does not sag with use.
Tub Chair Cover Crochet Pattern by Helen Free
What is Being Made
This is a fitted tub chair cover designed using UK crochet terminology. The cover is engineered to fit snugly around a tub-style chair, preventing sagging during regular use. The design features a vibrant patchwork effect created through strategic colour blocking and random colour placement throughout the project.
Crochet Techniques Used
The pattern employs several fundamental crochet techniques to achieve its structured, fitted design:
- Treble stitches (tr) form the primary fabric structure, providing the necessary density and stability for a chair cover that maintains its shape
- Turning chains are used at the beginning of rows; the pattern specifies that 1-chain and 2-chain turning stitches are for turning only and should not be counted as working stitches unless otherwise instructed
- Back loop working on the starting chain creates a neat, uniform finish on both the bottom and top edges of the work
- Colour changes are incorporated throughout, with colours changed for each block and applied randomly to build the patchwork aesthetic
- Working into unused loops is employed when necessary, picking up both loops as standard when working into the tops of other stitches
Stitches Used
The pattern is primarily constructed using treble stitches (tr) in UK crochet terms. The tension is worked to 22 trebles and 11 rows per 10 centimetres, establishing a tight, dense fabric appropriate for a fitted furniture cover that will withstand regular use without stretching or sagging.
Materials
This pattern uses DMC Petra No.3 thread, a fine crochet thread ideal for creating detailed, structured pieces. The colour palette includes:
- Three skeins each in orange (5608), yellow (5742), green (5905), and pale blue (5418)
- Two skeins each in red (5321) and violet (5383)
The colours are applied in a random patchwork arrangement, with some blocks incorporating two colours for added visual interest. The rainbow colour scheme creates a cheerful, coordinated aesthetic while maintaining the functional integrity of the fitted cover.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, requiring competence with basic crochet stitches, colour changes, tension control, and the ability to follow structured pattern instructions. The fitted design demands attention to tension and stitch accuracy to ensure the cover achieves its intended snug fit.
