Product Description
The wonderful ladies over at 7th Floor Yarn in New York contacted us to work on a collab with them for their Christmas in July Advent Calendar and this shawl is what happened!!
Their DK sparkle is a fantastic base to really spruce up this Tropical Christmas Stole that is knit on the bias! You will need approx. 680yds of DK weight yarn and size 5.5mm (US8). The stitch count never exceeds 70 sts so you don’t need a very long cord if you’re using circulars.
The shawl pictured used 1 full skein (231 yds) as the main color and 8 mini skeins (49yds each). This shawl would be great for an adventurous beginner as there is some simple lace and garter and eyelets. Guaranteed not to be boring!
Thank you ladies for this fantastic collaboration!! Happy Knitting!

What is Being Made
The Tropical Christmas Stole is a long, elegant shawl designed by Cozy Up Knits. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished accessory measuring approximately 75 inches long by 11.5 inches wide, making it a versatile wrap suitable for draping over shoulders or wearing as a decorative stole. The design combines festive tropical elements with Christmas styling, offering a unique seasonal accessory that blends warm-weather aesthetics with holiday charm.
Difficulty Level and Craft
This is a beginner-friendly knitting project that introduces crafters to fundamental knitting techniques while creating a sophisticated finished piece. The pattern is suitable for knitters new to shawl construction who want to develop their skills with a manageable, rewarding project.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Tropical Christmas Stole employs several core knitting techniques to create its visual interest and structure:
- Lace work featuring eyelet patterns that add delicate, openwork details throughout the design
- Single eyelets for subtle decorative elements
- Double eyelets for more pronounced lace sections
- Garter stitch as the foundational fabric, worked at a gauge of 19 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches
- Shaping techniques including decreases and yarn overs to create the stole's dimensions and drape
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and stitch techniques including:
- k (knit) and p (purl) for basic stitches
- k2tog (knit 2 stitches together) for right-leaning decreases
- ssk (slip, slip, knit) for left-leaning decreases
- yo (yarn over) for creating eyelets and lace openings
- kfb (knit front and back) for increases
- sl1wyif (slip 1 stitch with yarn in front) for edge definition
- Cast on techniques to begin the project
Yarn and Materials
The Tropical Christmas Stole is worked in DK weight yarn, a lightweight option that creates elegant drape in the finished stole.
Main Color: The pattern requires 100 grams (approximately 231 yards) of 7th Floor Yarn in DK weight. This yarn is composed of 75% Superwash Merino, 20% Nylon, and 5% Stellina, combining softness with durability and subtle sparkle.
Contrasting Colors: The design incorporates tropical color elements through contrasting yarn. Crafters may choose either approximately 49 yards (20 grams) each of 7th Floor Yarn DK weight in 8 different contrasting colors, or alternatively use 200 grams (approximately 460 yards) of a single contrast color. The contrasting yarn is 75% Superwash Merino and 25% Nylon.
Needles: Size 5.5 mm (US 8) needles are required for this project, appropriate for working with DK weight yarn at the specified gauge.
Additional Notions: The pattern calls for a dingledop (progress keeper) to mark the right side of work and a darning needle for finishing.
Pattern Structure
The Tropical Christmas Stole is organized into section repeats that allow crafters to build the stole systematically. The repeating sections help establish rhythm in the knitting process while creating the cohesive design that combines lace eyelet patterns with the garter stitch base.
