Triangulation Knit Waistcoat by ChrisdL

What is Being Made

Triangulation is an intermediate-level knit waistcoat designed by Chris de Longpré and published in 2004. This unusual vest features a distinctive construction method using bi-directional triangles that create visual interest and geometric texture. The waistcoat is versatile enough to pair with casual wear like jeans or dress up with pieces such as a little black skirt. The pattern offers three finished lengths and seven total sizes to accommodate a range of body measurements, making it accessible for various knitters and wearers.

Sizes and Finished Measurements

The Triangulation waistcoat is available in three size categories:

  • Size S: 36" and 38" finished length at center back: 23"
  • Size M: 40" and 42" finished length at center back: 25"
  • Size L: 44", 46", and 48" finished length at center back: 27"

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The defining characteristic of this design is its bi-directional triangle construction, which creates a fast and interesting knitting experience. Rather than working in traditional rows from bottom to top, the triangular segments are knit in multiple directions, allowing the geometric shapes to interlock and form the overall garment structure. This technique requires attention to directional changes but results in a visually striking finished piece with dimensional texture.

The pattern employs standard increase techniques including kfb (knit in the front and back of the stitch) and pfb (purl in the front and back of the stitch) to shape the triangular sections. These increases are fundamental to creating the geometric shaping that defines the waistcoat's appearance.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch used throughout Triangulation is stockinet stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric surface ideal for showcasing the geometric triangle construction. Stockinet stitch is achieved by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing the characteristic V-pattern texture that knitters recognize.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Triangulation is designed to be knit in bulky weight yarn, which allows the project to work up quickly despite its interesting construction. Yarn yardage requirements vary by size:

  • Size S: 500 yards bulky weight yarn
  • Size M: 600 yards bulky weight yarn
  • Size L: 700 yards bulky weight yarn

The pattern notes that the model shown was knit in Iro by Noro, a bulky weight yarn. Optional materials include approximately 20 yards of coordinating DK or worsted weight wool for assembly purposes, providing flexibility in finishing techniques.

Needles and Gauge

The pattern calls for US size 10 (6mm) needles in both straight and 16" circular formats, though knitters should size up or down as needed to achieve the correct gauge. The target gauge is 14 stitches and 18 rows over 4 inches (10cm) in stockinet stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the finished measurements specified in the pattern.

Finishing Supplies

To complete the Triangulation waistcoat, knitters will need a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends, stitch holders for managing stitches during construction, and three 7/8" buttons for the front closure. These finishing elements transform the knit pieces into a wearable, functional garment.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, Triangulation is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to explore more complex construction methods. The bi-directional triangle technique requires careful attention to pattern instructions and directional changes, but the use of bulky yarn and straightforward stitches keeps the project manageable for experienced beginners moving toward intermediate skills.
