Product Description
Trevose is a top down semi-circular shawl with a mixture of relaxing garter stitch and interesting brioche, finished with a simple garter lace border.
It begins with an i-cord cast on, continues with an integrated i-cord edging and has an i-cord bind off for a neat finish
Short rows are used to shape the triangles at the beginning, which are mirrored in the chevron lace border
Some familiarity with basic brioche stitches would be helpful but instructions on the techniques used and links to tutorials for the i-cord cast on, short rows and brioche increases and decreases are provided in the pattern
The pattern contains instructions for both a two colour and a three colour version. You should pick colours with good contrast for the best effect
Please note that the brioche section is written only. If you have purchased a copy of the pattern but would like a large print version please let me know and I will be happy to provide it.
Trevose Shawl by Charlotte Lorenzi
What is Being Made
The Trevose is a knitted shawl design available in both two-colour and three-colour variations. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished shawl measuring approximately 50 inches (127cm) wide by 19 inches (48cm) deep, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various occasions and styling preferences.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using the knitting craft, classified as an intermediate
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The Trevose pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and techniques including:
- Knit (K) – the basic knit stitch
- Purl (P) – the reverse of the knit stitch
- Yarn Over (YO) – creating decorative increases and lace elements
- Slip 3 stitches purl-wise with yarn in front (Sl3wyif) – a slip stitch variation used for edge definition and shaping
- Garter Stitch – the primary fabric structure, created by knitting every row, which produces a textured, reversible fabric
The pattern incorporates stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and construction sections, essential for maintaining accuracy throughout the project.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Trevose pattern is designed for fingering weight yarn, available in both 3-ply and 4-ply weights. The pattern accommodates multiple colourway options:
Three-Colour Version Yarn Requirements:
- Colour A: Fyberspates Vivacious 4ply in Tweed Imps – approximately 68g (248m/271y)
- Colour B: Colinette Jitterbug in Lobster Pinch – approximately 56g (148m/162y)
- Colour C: Madelinétosh Tosh Sock in Turquoise – approximately 38g (137m/150y)
Two-Colour Version Yarn Requirements:
- Colour A: Malabrigo Mechita in Whales Road – approximately 82g (316m/344y)
- Colour B: Malabrigo Mechita in Frank Ochre – approximately 52g (200m/218y)
The pattern specifies contrasting colours to enhance the visual impact of the shawl design. Total yardage requirements vary depending on the chosen colourway version.
Needles and Additional Supplies
Construction requires a 3.25mm circular needle measuring at least 80cm (32 inches) in length. The longer circular needle accommodates the expanding stitch count as the shawl grows. Additional supplies include waste yarn for provisional cast-on, six stitch markers for pattern tracking, and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends during finishing.
Gauge and Sizing Information
The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 36 rows per 4 inches (10cm) in garter stitch after blocking. The designer notes that while gauge is not crucial to the pattern's success, variations in gauge will affect both the final dimensions of the completed shawl and the total yarn quantity required. The sample shawl shown in the pattern measured 50 inches wide by 19 inches deep when blocked to the specified gauge.
Pattern Format and Designer
