Toy Donkey by Rian Anderson

What Is Being Made

This is a knitted stuffed toy donkey designed by Rian Anderson, suitable for display or play. The finished toy measures 23 cm in height to the top of the back and 35 cm in length from end to end. The pattern creates a three-dimensional animal figure with distinct body parts including a body, head, ears, mane, and tail. The design is described as "of the gloomy sort," suggesting a particular character or expression to the finished piece.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project uses knitting as the primary construction method. The pattern is worked primarily in stocking stitch using straight needles. A crochet hook is also required for certain finishing techniques, indicating that the pattern likely incorporates crochet elements alongside the knitted sections. The combination of knitting and crochet allows for varied texture and construction options within a single toy project.

Stitches and Construction Methods

The pattern employs stocking stitch as the main stitch throughout the knitted sections. A cable cast-on method is specified for beginning the project, which creates a sturdy, flexible edge suitable for toy construction. The pattern includes instructions for increasing stitches using a specific technique where the right needle is placed between the last two stitches to create the next stitch, rather than working into the existing stitch as in standard knit increases. This method allows for precise shaping of the toy's various body parts.

Materials and Specifications

The toy is designed to be worked in 8 ply/DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition and appropriate fabric weight for a stuffed toy. The yarn requirements are as follows:

  • 80 grams of grey or mid-brown yarn for the main body
  • 10 grams of fawn or cream yarn for the inner ears
  • 10 grams of dark brown yarn for the mane and tail
  • Small amounts of black yarn for the mouth details

Construction requires 3.5 mm (US 4) knitting needles and a 3.5 mm (US 4) crochet hook. The gauge is worked at 21 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch on 3.5 mm needles using 8 ply/DK yarn. However, the pattern notes that as this is a toy, exact gauge is not crucial, allowing for some flexibility in tension.

Additional Supplies

Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern requires several finishing and assembly materials. A large tapestry needle is needed for sewing seams and joining the knitted pieces together. The toy is stuffed with dacron toy filling, a standard synthetic fiberfill suitable for handmade toys. For eyes, the pattern includes 1 pair of 25 mm joggle toy eyes; however, the pattern specifically notes that sew-on eyes are not safe for children 3 years old or younger, and recommends using safety eyes instead for young children. Additional supplies include a stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and safety pins for holding pieces in place during assembly.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. The project combines basic knitting techniques with shaping, color changes, and assembly skills. The use of both knitting and crochet, along with the three-dimensional construction required to create a realistic animal form, places this project beyond beginner level but remains accessible to knitters with foundational skills and some experience with garment or toy construction.
