Product Description

With their properly shaped seat, these versatile, deliciously hobbity pants fit correctly and can accommodate even cloth diapers. The folded-over waist casing is designed for a cord but and elastic waistband can also easily be substituted. Two leg lengths are included: below the knee to protect those little knees (and look adorable), and a full-length option as well. The suspenders complete the outfit, but can also be left out for an everyday look.

CONSTRUCTION:

These pants are knit seamlessly in the round from the waist to the ribbed leg cuffs and feature optional straps. A folded-over waist casing with an I-cord tie ensures a secure fit around the waist. Short rows and a looser fit in the seat area help accommodate even bulky diapers. The crotch is closed by grafting (just a few stitches) or a three-needle bind off. Stitches are picked up from the top of the waistband to work the straps. The leg length is designed to be below the knee but instructions for full-length are also included.

Tookish Britches by Frogginette Knitting Patterns

What is Being Made

Tookish Britches are knitted children's trousers designed by Lisa Chemery. This downloadable knitting pattern provides instructions for creating fitted pants suitable for infants and children, with size options ranging from 3 months through 10 years old. The garment is designed to fit waist circumferences from 18 to 24.5 inches (45.5 to 62 cm), making it a versatile pattern for growing children.

Sizes and Fit

The pattern includes ten different size options: 3mo, 6mo, 12mo, 18mo, 2yo, 4yo, 6yo, 8yo, and 10yo. Finished garment waist circumferences range from 17.75 inches (45 cm) in the smallest size to 25 inches (63.5 cm) in the largest size. The pattern recommends selecting sizes based on the child's actual waist measurement rather than age alone, allowing knitters to customize the fit with varying amounts of ease.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs in-the-round knitting as the primary construction method. The pattern utilizes circular needles for the main body sections and double-pointed needles (dpns) for shaping the leg portions. This technique creates seamless, tubular construction ideal for fitted garments like trousers.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern used throughout Tookish Britches is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric surface. Stockinette stitch in the round produces the characteristic V-shaped appearance typical of knitted garments and provides an excellent base for fitted children's clothing.

Gauge and Yarn Weight

The pattern is designed to work with worsted weight yarn at a gauge of 18 stitches by 28 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch using the larger needles after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements. The pattern explicitly recommends adjusting needle size if necessary to match the specified gauge, ensuring that the trousers fit appropriately across all size options.

Needles and Tools Required

  • US 8 (5 mm) circular needle, 16 inches (40 cm) in length, for working the main body in stockinette stitch
  • US 7 (4.5 mm) double-pointed needles for shaping and working the leg sections
  • Matching dpns for completing leg shaping and finishing

Difficulty Level

Tookish Britches is rated as an intermediate-level knitting project. While the primary stitch (stockinette) is fundamental, the pattern requires knitters to manage shaping, work with circular needles and dpns, and understand gauge and sizing adjustments. This makes it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques.

Pattern Format

This pattern is available as a downloadable PDF from Frogginette Knitting Patterns, an independent designer brand. The PDF format includes schematic diagrams for complete garment measurements and detailed instructions for all ten size options in a single document.
