Product Description

This is a crochet tunic pattern for the Tommy P. Tunic. The velvet yarn reminded me of the 90's, and I'm a 90's kid! So I named this tunic after one of the characters from my favorite TV shows growing up. This tunic is made in two panels whipped together, with a high seam, a ribbed collar, and long sleeves ending in a matching rib.

What is Being Made

The Tommy P. Tunic is a crochet tunic designed as part of a complete fall outfit that includes boots and leggings. This garment is a pullover-style tunic worked in a chunky yarn weight, featuring a relaxed fit suitable for layering during cooler seasons. The tunic is available in four sizes ranging from Small (34" bust circumference) to Extra Large (46" bust circumference), with customizable length options to suit individual preferences.

Techniques Used

This beginner-friendly crochet project employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques to create texture and structure. The tunic is constructed using a modular approach, with the front and back panels created separately before being joined together. This method allows for easier customization and adjustments during the construction process. The design incorporates textured stitches that add visual interest and dimension to the finished garment, making it suitable for crafters new to crochet who want to expand their skill set beyond basic stitches.

Stitches Used

The Tommy P. Tunic pattern utilizes several crochet stitches to create its structure and texture:

  • Double Crochet (DC): A foundational stitch used throughout the body of the tunic
  • Double Crochet Two Together (DC2Tog): Used for shaping and decreasing, worked through the third and first loop
  • Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC): Creates textured ribbing and dimensional effects on the garment
  • Front Post Double Crochet Two Together (FPDC2Tog): A decrease variation that maintains the textured appearance while reducing stitch count
  • Half Double Crochet (FHDC): Used for lighter, more flexible sections of the garment

Materials Required

The Tommy P. Tunic is designed to be worked in Bernat Velvet yarn in the Taupe Coffee colorway, though the pattern notes indicate that any bulky weight yarn of similar yardage can be substituted. The project requires 3 to 5 skeins depending on size selection, totaling approximately 900 to 1500 yards of yarn. Construction requires a 5mm H crochet hook, along with basic finishing tools including a darning needle for weaving in ends and a stitch marker for tracking pattern progression. The gauge is established at 12 half double crochet stitches by 8 rows equaling 4 inches by 4 inches, which is important for achieving the correct finished measurements.

Sizing and Finished Measurements

The tunic is offered in four sizes with the following specifications: Small features a 34" bust circumference with 27" length from shoulders to hem; Medium offers a 38" bust circumference, also with 27" length; Large provides a 42" bust circumference with 28" length; and Extra Large features a 46" bust circumference with 28" length. The armhole width when laid flat measures 7.5" for Small and Medium sizes, and 8.5" for Large and Extra Large. Sleeve length is consistent across all sizes at 21.5". The collar adds an additional 4 inches to the overall length, and the pattern allows for further customization by adding extra rows to extend the tunic length as desired.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as Easy and is suitable for beginners, making it an excellent choice for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle a wearable garment project. The straightforward construction method and use of fundamental crochet techniques make this tunic accessible to crafters building their skills.
