Product Description
This tee is knit from the top down - first the front and back sections are knitted flat and then they are joined to be knitted in the round.
It’s sized from S to 5X, with a little positive ease and a gentle a-line shape. It’s shown here in size S on Tanya, who is a UK size 8.
The sample was knit in Eden Cottage Yarns BFL. A substitute yarn is shown below.
Tiny Shoots by Kate Heppell: Knitted 4-Ply Top
What is Being Made
Tiny Shoots is a knitted top design by independent designer Kate Heppell, available as a downloadable PDF pattern. This garment is crafted using the knitting technique and is suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The pattern offers eight different sizes ranging from S to 5X, making it accessible to a wide range of body types and measurements.
Yarn and Materials
Yarn: Eden Cottage Yarns BFL Sock in the colorway Bluebell. This is a 4-ply weight yarn composed of 100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, with each 100g skein providing 400 meters of yardage. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 155g to 310g depending on which size is being knitted.
Needles and Notions: The pattern requires 3.75mm circular needles measuring 60cm in length, suitable for working in the round. Additional supplies include four stitch markers, a stitch holder, or waste yarn for managing stitches during construction.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Tiny Shoots employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The primary stitch used throughout the garment is stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch), which creates a smooth, classic fabric when worked in the round by knitting every round, or when working flat by alternating knit and purl rows.
The pattern incorporates several shaping and decorative techniques:
- M1 (Make One): An increase method worked by lifting the bar between stitches and knitting into the back of this bar, used for subtle shaping
- K2tog (Knit Two Together): A right-leaning decrease that combines two stitches into one
- Ssk (Slip, Slip, Knit): A left-leaning decrease created by slipping two stitches individually and then knitting them together through their back loops
- Cdd (Central Double Decrease): An advanced decrease technique that reduces three stitches to one, creating a centered vertical line
- Yarn Over (Yo): A decorative increase that creates an eyelet or lace effect
Tension and Sizing
The pattern is designed to be worked at a tension of 18 stitches and 30 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) when measured in stocking stitch. Accurate tension is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. The schematic provided in the pattern details the precise finished measurements for each of the eight available sizes.
Pattern Structure
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and notation conventions. Square brackets and asterisks indicate sections that should be repeated, while round brackets denote size-specific information. Stitch markers are used to track pattern repeats and construction points throughout the knitting process.
