Tied and True Tee by Michelle Ferguson
Project Overview
The Tied and True Tee is an intermediate-level crochet top designed by Michelle Ferguson. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a fitted, wearable garment suitable for a range of sizes from toddler through adult extra-large. The design emphasizes versatility in sizing and yarn requirements, making it accessible to crocheters with intermediate skill levels.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a crocheted tee shirt available in multiple sizes: toddler sizes 2, 4, 6, and 8; children's sizes 10; and adult sizes XS, S, M, L, XL, and 2X. Chest measurements range from 21 inches for the smallest toddler size to 50 inches for the largest adult size. The garment is designed as a pullover-style top suitable for everyday wear.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Tied and True Tee employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The primary stitches used in this pattern include:
- Chain stitches (ch) – Used to create the foundation and various structural elements throughout the garment
- Single crochet (sc) – A basic stitch that creates a tight, dense fabric
- Herringbone double crochet (herr-dc) – A textured stitch variation that adds visual interest and dimension to the finished piece. This stitch is executed by yarning over, inserting the hook into a stitch, drawing up a loop and pulling through one loop on the hook, yarning over again, pulling through one loop (leaving two loops on the hook), then yarning over and pulling through both remaining loops
The herringbone double crochet creates a distinctive textured appearance while maintaining a relatively moderate fabric weight, making it ideal for a wearable garment. The combination of these stitches allows for both structural integrity and visual appeal in the finished tee.
Materials and Gauge
The Tied and True Tee is worked with fingering weight yarn (#1), which is a lightweight yarn suitable for creating garments with drape and breathability. Yardage requirements vary significantly by size, ranging from 300 yards for the smallest toddler size (2, 21" chest) to 1600 yards for the largest adult size (2X, 50" bust). Mid-range adult sizes typically require between 1092 and 1400 yards.
The pattern calls for a G (4.0mm) crochet hook or an appropriate hook size to obtain the specified gauge. The recommended gauge is 18 herringbone double crochet stitches by 13 rows equals 4 inches, which is essential for achieving proper fit across all size options.
Additional Materials
Beyond yarn and a crochet hook, the pattern requires basic finishing supplies: scissors for cutting yarn, a measuring tape for checking gauge and garment dimensions during construction, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and any necessary seaming.
Pattern Format and Support
This pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, making it convenient for digital access and printing. The designer, Michelle Ferguson, provides additional support through a video tutorial, allowing crocheters to visualize stitch techniques and construction methods.
