Product Description
A wonderful cardigan to help you transition between seasons or great as an extra layer in the winter. Perfect for those not quite sweater quantities and a skein or two of a contrasting color. Slip stitch stripes add some interest, and look more difficult than they are, you are never using more than one color at a time! The top-down simultaneous set-in sleeves add a lovely tailored look with only a small amount of stitches to pick up and no short rows. Named for Thyone, one of the moons of Jupiter, which was in turn named for the mortal mother of Dionysus, who later became a goddess.
This pattern is worked from the top down, with simultaneous set-in sleeves. Once the body and sleeves are complete, the button band is picked up and worked in one piece. A shaping tracking sheet is included to help you keep track of the stitch pattern and increases. A diagram for picking up the sleeve stitches is also included.
The sample was knit in Malabrigo Rastita. A substitute yarn is shown below.
Thyone Cardigan by Tori Gurbisz
What is Being Made
Thyone is a top-down cardigan designed by Tori Gurbisz and published by Lachesis and Co. This versatile layering piece transitions beautifully between seasons and works as an extra winter layer. The cardigan is available in ten sizes, ranging from 28 inches to 57.25 inches bust measurement, making it suitable for a wide range of body types. The design is particularly ideal for knitters who have leftover yarn quantities or wish to use a skein or two of contrasting color for visual interest.
Techniques Used
The Thyone cardigan features several advanced knitting techniques that create both visual appeal and structural integrity. Slip stitch stripes add decorative interest throughout the design while appearing more complex than they actually are to execute. The most notable construction method is the use of top-down simultaneous set-in sleeves, which creates a tailored, professional appearance with minimal effort. This technique requires picking up only a small number of stitches and eliminates the need for short-rows, streamlining the construction process while achieving a polished fit.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which forms the foundation of this cardigan. The slip stitch stripes are worked into this stockinette base, creating textural variation without requiring complex stitch patterns. The gauge for this project is 22 stitches and 31 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in stockinette stitch using the larger needle.
Materials and Yarn
Thyone is designed to be worked in Malabrigo Rastita, a 100% Merino Wool yarn with approximately 310 yards per 100 grams. The main color (MC) featured in the pattern sample is Plomo. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 3 skeins for the smallest sizes (28, 31, 33.75, and 36.75 inches) to 5 skeins for the largest sizes (51.5, 54.5, and 57.25 inches). The pattern is worked with DK weight yarn, which provides excellent drape and stitch definition for the slip stitch stripe details.
