What is Being Made

ThistleBee is a charming knitted stuffed toy designed by Vicki Stewart for Hillandbenz. This project creates a Scottish-inspired bee character, described as a cousin of the Wanna-Bee design and inspired by Buzzy Bee™. The finished toy features a dimensional body with contrasting colored sections, antennae, and button embellishments that bring personality to this whimsical handmade creation.

Craft and Techniques

This is a knitting project suitable for knitters with intermediate skill level. The toy is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques combined with shaping methods to create a three-dimensional form. The pattern employs both flat knitting on straight needles for the main body sections and circular knitting using double-pointed needles for specialized components.

Key techniques include:

• Stockinette stitch (st-st) as the primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, classic knitted surface
• Increases and decreases strategically placed to shape the toy's body, creating curves and dimension
• I-cord construction for the antennae, a specialized technique using double-pointed needles to create tubular cord
• Seaming and assembly to join multiple knitted pieces together
• Surface embellishment with buttons and embroidered details

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes essential knitting stitches including:

• Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches as the foundation
• Increases (incr) to add stitches and expand the fabric
• Decreases including skpo (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over), k2tog (knit two together), p2tog (purl two together), and sl1, p2tog, psso (slip one, purl two together, pass slipped stitch over) to reduce stitches and shape the toy
• Cast on and cast off techniques to begin and finish the knitted fabric

Materials Required

This project uses DK weight yarn (also referred to as 8ply in the pattern), with yardage distributed across three colors:

• 60 meters of cream-colored DK weight yarn for the main body
• 45 meters of purple DK weight yarn for contrast sections
• 4 meters of green DK weight yarn for accent details

Additional materials include:

• 3.25mm straight needles for knitting the primary body pieces
• 3.25mm double-pointed needles for creating the i-cord antennae and any circular sections
• Washable toy stuffing to fill and shape the completed toy
• 2 tiny black buttons for eyes
• 2 small or medium cream-colored buttons to serve as wheel hubs
• Contrast sewing thread for securing eye buttons and other embroidery work

The DK weight yarn and 3.25mm needles create a fabric with appropriate drape and density for a small stuffed toy, allowing for detailed shaping while maintaining structural integrity when filled with toy stuffing.
