Product Description
This is such a fun beach bag to make. I used Caron Cotton Cake (540yds) and a 5mm H hook. It works from the bottom up using hdc and a granny hdc. I chose to use a twisted rope for the drawstring but feel free to be creative with your handle. I would love to see your bag so please upload a photo to my projects once you finished. I hope you enjoy. Finished bag is approximately 18" x 10"
This Is My Slouchy Beach Bag
Project Overview
This Is My Slouchy Beach Bag by It's Just A Yarn Thing is an intermediate-level crochet project designed to create a practical and stylish beach accessory. The finished bag measures approximately 18 inches long by 12.5 inches wide, making it spacious enough for beach essentials while maintaining a relaxed, slouchy silhouette.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a drawstring beach bag with a slouchy aesthetic. The bag features a structured base that transitions into relaxed sides, topped with a decorative rope drawstring that serves as both closure and carrying handle. The design combines functionality with a casual, laid-back beach style suitable for carrying towels, sunscreen, and other summer necessities.
Crochet Techniques Used
The pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. Construction begins with a magic circle (also called magic ring), a technique that creates a tight, adjustable center point for circular projects. The bag is worked in the round using slip stitches to join rounds seamlessly. Increases are strategically placed throughout the pattern to shape the bag's structure and create the slouchy effect.
Crochet Stitches Used
- Half Double Crochet (HDC): The primary stitch throughout the pattern, providing a dense, sturdy fabric suitable for a functional beach bag
- Chain (Ch): Used at the beginning of rows and rounds; the pattern notes that the ch1 at the beginning of rows does not count as a stitch unless otherwise stated
- Slip Stitch (Sl st): Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
- HDC Granny Stitch: A special stitch variation involving 2 half double crochets in the same stitch or space, used to create increases and texture
Materials and Tools
The pattern calls for worsted weight (#4) cotton yarn, with the designer using a large Caron Cotton Cake containing 540 yards. Any worsted weight cotton yarn of similar yardage will work for this project. A US H (5.0mm) crochet hook is recommended. Additional materials include decorative rope for the drawstring and handle, scissors, a stitch marker (optional), and a large needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Gauge and Construction Notes
The pattern indicates that gauge does not significantly impact the final result; however, the designer's gauge is 9 stitches and 2 rows of half double crochet equaling 1 inch. Construction begins with a magic circle base round, establishing 10 half double crochets. The second round doubles the stitch count to 20 stitches through strategic increases, setting the foundation for the bag's expanding structure.
Skill Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational knowledge of basic stitches and comfortable working in the round. The magic circle technique and consistent stitch pattern make this an excellent project for crafters looking to expand their skills beyond beginner-level bags.
