Product Description
This is one of my favorite quick knit patterns. I used Malabrigo rios and it provides that squishy quality to the fingerless gloves that just makes them fun to wear. They hug your hands without being too tight.
Thermal Mitts Knitting Pattern by Made By Lilian
What Is Being Made
The Thermal Mitts are a pair of knitted hand coverings designed to provide warmth and comfort. This downloadable knitting pattern creates fitted mittens that are ideal for cold weather protection. The pattern is available in three sizes—small, medium, and large—allowing for customization based on hand dimensions. The finished length for the small size is 8 3/4 inches, with the option to add additional rounds for extended coverage if desired.
Craft and Technique Overview
This project uses the knitting craft, making it suitable for knitters of all skill levels, particularly beginners. The mittens are constructed using the in-the-round knitting method, which creates seamless cylindrical fabric ideal for fitted garments. This technique eliminates the need for seaming and produces a smooth, professional finish. The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques that are accessible to those new to the craft while still producing quality results.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Thermal Mitts pattern incorporates essential knitting stitches and increases/decreases:
- Knit (k) – the foundational stitch that creates the primary fabric texture
- Purl (p) – used in combination with knit stitches to create pattern variation and texture
- Knit front and back increase (kf/b) – a method for adding stitches to shape the mittens
- Knit decrease (k2tog) – a technique for reducing stitches to create proper fit and shaping
Materials Required
Needles: The pattern calls for double-pointed needles in two sizes. Use 4mm double-pointed needles for small and medium sizes, and 5mm double-pointed needles for the large size. The designer used Denise Flex Double Pointed Needles (a 3-needle set), though standard 4-needle double-pointed needle sets work equally well. When using alternative needle sets, ensure your cast-on stitch count divides evenly across the needles.
Yarn: One skein of worsted weight yarn is sufficient to complete one pair of Thermal Mitts. Depending on the yardage of your chosen yarn, you may have leftovers. The designer used Malabrigo Rios (210 yards) and was able to complete one pair with yarn remaining. Worsted weight yarn is a medium-weight option that provides good stitch definition and works up at a moderate pace.
Additional Supplies: Two stitch markers are needed to track pattern repeats and size sections during the in-the-round construction.
Sizing and Gauge Information
The pattern offers three size options with different cast-on stitch counts:
- Small: Cast on 32 stitches using 4mm needles
- Medium: Cast on 36 stitches using 4mm needles
- Large: Cast on 36 stitches using 5mm needles
The gauge for this pattern is 7 rounds by 6 stitches equals 1 inch. Checking your gauge before beginning is important to ensure your finished mittens match the intended dimensions. The small size produces a finished length of 8 3/4 inches; however, knitters can add additional rounds beyond the pattern instructions to achieve longer coverage if preferred.
Pattern Structure
The Thermal Mitts pattern begins with a cast-on section using the appropriate needle size for your chosen size. The construction includes set-up rounds where stitch markers are placed to organize the stitches for working in the round. This foundational section establishes the structure for the remainder of the pattern and ensures even stitch distribution across the needles.
