Therapeutic Cowl by Alicia Plummer
What Is Being Made
The Therapeutic is a knitted cowl designed by independent designer Alicia Plummer. This finished piece measures 36 inches (92 cm) in circumference and 15.5 inches (39 cm) in depth, making it a substantial neck accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a statement piece. The cowl is worked from the bottom up and features a reversible construction, allowing it to be worn with either side facing outward.
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level project employs several advanced knitting techniques to achieve a polished, professional finish. The cowl uses a tubular cast-on and tubular bind-off method, which creates a clean, elastic edge that is both visually refined and functionally stretchy. These techniques eliminate the visible edge that traditional cast-on and bind-off methods produce, making the cowl truly reversible. For knitters unfamiliar with tubular methods, the pattern offers substitutions using the Long Tail cast-on and EZ Sewn Bind-off as alternatives.
The pattern also incorporates cable work, indicated by the requirement for a cable needle among the notions. Steam blocking is recommended for finishing to help set the stitches and enhance the overall appearance of the completed cowl.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch pattern used in the Therapeutic is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a refined appearance on both sides due to the reversible design. The pattern also includes ribbing in a knit 1, purl 1 (k1,p1) configuration, which provides elasticity and structure. Cable stitches are incorporated into the design, adding textural interest and visual complexity to the piece.
Materials and Gauge
The Therapeutic requires 340 yards (319 meters) of yarn in an aran weight, which is a medium-heavy yarn suitable for creating substantial, warm garments. The suggested yarn is Quince & Co Osprey, a premium option made from 100% American Wool, which provides durability, natural elasticity, and excellent drape. This yarn is available in 170-yard (155-meter) skeins of 100 grams (3.53 ounces), meaning approximately two skeins are needed to complete the project.
The pattern is worked on US Size #10.5 (6.5 mm) 32-inch circular needles for the main fabric and US Size #9 (5.5 mm) 32-inch circular needles for ribbed sections or edgings. The gauge is 15 stitches and 21 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch on the larger needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements.
Additional Notions and Tools
- Darning needle or crochet hook for weaving in ends
- Cable needle for cable stitch work
- 3 stitch markers in color A for tracking pattern repeats
- 1 beginning-of-round (BOR) marker in color B for identifying the round start
This downloadable PDF pattern from Alicia Plummer provides a complete, intermediate-level knitting project ideal for crafters seeking to expand their technical skills while creating a beautiful, wearable cowl.
