Product Description
“The secret life of Walter Mitty” is one of my favourite movie and I wanted to recreate the sweater that the main caracter wears during the movie. It is knit in the round, from the top-down and seamlessly. With lots of texture and cables, this sweater will keep you very engaged! The stitch patterns are charged and also have written instructions.
The Walter Sweater by Josée Paquin
What Is Being Made
The Walter Sweater is an advanced-level knitted pullover sweater designed by Josée Paquin. This pattern offers multiple size options with yardage ranging from approximately 816 to 1989 metres (892 to 2175 yards) depending on the chosen size, making it a substantial garment project suitable for experienced knitters seeking a complex construction challenge.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project that employs advanced techniques throughout its construction. The sweater is worked using circular needles for the main body and flat sections, with double-pointed needles utilized for smaller circumference areas such as the collar and sleeve trims. The pattern demonstrates professional-level garment shaping and finishing methods appropriate for a designer-created piece.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
The Walter Sweater incorporates fundamental knitting stitches combined with specialized techniques:
- Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches form the foundation of the fabric
- Cast on (CO) and bind off (BO) techniques for edge finishing
- Increases (inc) and decreases (dec) for shaping the garment silhouette
- Double stitch (ds) – a specialized technique where yarn is brought to front, the stitch is slipped as if to purl, yarn is brought over the needle to the back, and the work is pulled tight, creating a distinctive double-stitch appearance
- Slip marker (slm) and marker (m) placement for tracking pattern repeats and construction points
- Turn the work (tw) for directional changes in flat sections
Materials and Tools
The Walter Sweater is designed for worsted weight yarn, demonstrated in the pattern sample using Cascade 220 Heathers in colour 4008 burgundy. The pattern requires three sizes of circular needles and double-pointed needles to accommodate different sections of the garment:
- 4.5 mm/US 7 circular needle and DPNs for the main body construction (needle size may be adjusted as needed to achieve correct gauge)
- 4 mm/US 6 circular needle for transitional sections
- 3.75 mm/US 5 circular needle and DPNs specifically for the collar and sleeve trims, creating a refined finish with tighter gauge
- Tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in yarn ends
Pattern Format and Difficulty Level
The Walter Sweater is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern created by independent designer Josée Paquin and published by UandIknit in March 2020. This pattern is classified as advanced difficulty, indicating it is intended for experienced knitters with solid understanding of garment construction, gauge management, and complex shaping techniques. The multiple size options and specialized stitching methods require careful attention to pattern instructions and stitch abbreviations throughout the project.
