Product Description
Who can resist a quick to knit aran sock? Once I completed the first sock the centered cable and tweedy yarn brought to mind something you would find in a Land's End catalog. Also, the person I created these for wanted to replace something he had owned previously. Together these factors led to the title 'The Usual'.
Details: The foot of the sock is knit the purl side out so the inside is smooth for the wearer. The sock is knit as a tube then the heel is knit last. That is the only finishing. Be sure to read all of the instructions for each section prior to starting. Part of the charm of this sock comes from the color block construction. A second color (CC) is used for the toe, heel, and cuff. Only one color is used at a time.
Sizes: Womens, (Mens/Womens Wide, Mens Wide)
Flat measurements: 3.5 (3.75, 4) inches As these socks are knit from the toe up it is very easy to adjust width and length.

What Is Being Made
The Usual Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for women's socks available in multiple sizes: Womens, Womens wide/Mens, and Mens wide. The finished flat instep measurements when unstretched are 3.5 inches, 3.75 inches, and 4 inches respectively. These socks are designed with a ribbed construction that provides excellent stretch and accommodation for various foot and leg widths.
Knitting Techniques
This pattern employs several key knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The socks are knit from the toe up, a construction method that offers practical advantages: it allows knitters to easily adjust the foot width during the knitting process and makes it simple to monitor remaining yarn as the project progresses. The pattern features a 1x1 ribbing throughout, which creates the characteristic stretch and flexibility of the finished socks. An afterthought heel is the primary heel construction method provided, though the pattern notes that alternative heel techniques can be substituted based on knitter preference. The ribbed structure makes these socks particularly versatile for different foot shapes and widths.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch pattern used in The Usual Socks is 1x1 ribbing, which alternates knit and purl stitches in a regular pattern. This ribbing creates vertical columns of texture and is the basis for the gauge specification: 28 stitches and 32 rows measured over a 4-inch by 4-inch swatch in 1x1 ribbing. The ribbed construction is essential to the sock's functionality, providing the stretch necessary for a comfortable, secure fit across multiple foot widths.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern sample is knit with Debbie Bliss Donegal Luxury Tweed Aran yarn, a blend of 90% wool and 10% angora. The yardage is 93 yards per 50 grams. The sample uses 3 balls total: 2 balls in the Natural colorway (main color) and 1 ball in Chestnut (contrast color). Aran weight yarn is specified for this pattern.
Needles and Notions: Knitters can choose between US 5/3.75mm double-pointed needles (DPNs) or one long circular needle, depending on their preferred small-circumference knitting method. The pattern provides instructions for knitting on 3 DPNs but explicitly notes that a single long circular needle works equally well. Additional notions required include a cable needle, stitch markers, a darning needle for finishing, and a small amount of waste yarn for the afterthought heel construction.
Pattern Notes
The designer recommends weighing the yarn balls and dividing them into equal portions to accurately track yardage consumption throughout the project. This approach is particularly useful for the toe-up construction method, allowing knitters to ensure they have sufficient yarn remaining for the leg and cuff before committing to that portion of the pattern.
