Product Description

Designed by myself, this colorful cowl is part of a series of cowls I'm doing inspired by New York, my home state. They are designed to be comfortable, fun to knit, and perfect to wear with a stylish wool coat or a denim jacket.

The Tribeca Cowl was named so because it has 3 cables. Tri-cables... Tri-beca. Also because a lot of famous people are wearing chunky cabled cowls these days... and Tribeca is the hottest film production company and festival.

Featuring three loose, ribbed, chunky cables with lots of stretch! Suggested yarns: Anything worsted weight. Needle size: 11 (8mm)

The Tribeca Cowl by Aunt Janet's Designs

Project Overview

The Tribeca Cowl is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Janet Jameson. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a classic cowl—a versatile neckwear piece that combines textural interest with straightforward construction techniques suitable for knitters with some experience.

What Is Being Made

The Tribeca Cowl is a tubular neckwear accessory created through flat knitting and seaming. The finished piece features decorative cable motifs worked into a ribbed fabric base, resulting in a cowl that can be worn draped around the neck for warmth and style.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques:

  • Double-Strand Knitting: Yarn is held double throughout the entire project, which creates a thicker, more substantial fabric and contributes to the cowl's structure and drape.
  • Cable Knitting: The pattern features cable stitches that appear strategically throughout the design. Cables are created by moving stitches to a cable needle, holding them to the front or back of the work, and then knitting across to create the characteristic twisted rope-like texture.
  • Seaming: The flat-knitted piece is seamed together using a yarn needle. The pattern offers flexibility in finishing methods, including the option to use Kitchener stitch (grafting) for an invisible join or a simple backstitch seam positioned at the back.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Tribeca Cowl uses a limited palette of stitches, making it accessible for intermediate knitters:

  • Knit Stitch (K): The fundamental stitch used throughout the base fabric.
  • Purl Stitch (P): Combined with knit stitches to create textural contrast and definition.
  • Ribbed Pattern: A repeating (K2, P1) and (P2, K1) sequence forms the primary fabric structure, creating vertical lines of texture and elasticity.
  • Cable Stitch: Worked over 6 stitches, cables are integrated into the ribbed pattern at specific intervals (Rows 7, 17, and subsequent repeats) to add visual interest and dimensional texture.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Tribeca Cowl is worked in aran weight yarn (also referred to as worsted weight in the pattern), requiring approximately 9 ounces total. The yarn is held double throughout the project, effectively creating a thicker working yarn from standard-weight strands.

Needles: Size 11 (8mm) knitting needles are specified for this project. A cable needle or spare double-pointed needle is also required for managing cable stitches during construction. Stitch markers are optional but helpful for tracking pattern repeats.

Pattern Structure

The pattern begins with casting on 35 stitches and establishes a foundation of ribbed rows. Cable motifs are introduced at strategic intervals—first with two cables in Row 7, then transitioning to a single cable placement in Row 17. This 20-row repeat sequence is worked five complete times, followed by a partial repeat, creating a cowl with consistent cable placement and visual rhythm. The piece is bound off after the final row and seamed to create the finished tubular form.
