Product Description

This is a pretty easy shawl to work up. It is a top down in my favorite shape, "crescent."

More than the stitch pattern, I fell in love with this yarn, and the gradual intensity of the color. This by itself, kept my interest in the design.

After the yarn, then, of course, I fell in love with this little shell pattern. I thought I would get tired of it, but because you work less and less of them as you go along, I was satisfied. The Garter stitch in between gives you a little rest.

The shawl is worked from the top down and from the lightest color to the darkest. I couldn't wait to get to each color to see the change in the shell pattern.

As I was working with this pattern, another design popped into my head for this yarn, so I'm off to start playing again.

The Shell Game Shawl by Mary Triplett

What is Being Made

The Shell Game is a top-down triangular shawl designed by Mary Triplett and published by Just Knits. This intermediate-level knitting project showcases a gradual color progression that builds visual interest as the shawl expands from the top down. The design features a repeating shell stitch pattern that decreases in frequency as the shawl grows, creating a dynamic interplay between stitch work and colorway.

Design Inspiration and Construction

Mary Triplett drew inspiration primarily from the yarn itself—Greenwood Fiberworks Star Dust in the Arcade colorway—and the gradual intensity of its color changes. The designer paired this stunning yarn with a classic shell stitch pattern, which repeats throughout the upper sections of the shawl. As the garment is worked from top to bottom, the number of shell pattern repeats decreases, allowing the knitter to experience less repetition as the project progresses. This thoughtful construction keeps the knitting experience engaging and prevents monotony. Garter stitch sections are interspersed throughout, providing visual and tactile contrast while offering the knitter periodic rest from the more intricate shell pattern work.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This shawl employs fundamental top-down construction, a popular method for triangular shawls that allows the knitter to monitor finished size easily and adjust yardage as needed. The primary stitch pattern is a shell stitch, a decorative motif that creates scalloped or shell-like textures across the fabric. Garter stitch sections provide structural support and visual breathing room between shell pattern repeats. The combination of these two stitch types creates textural variety and maintains knitter interest throughout the project.

Materials and Specifications

This pattern calls for Greenwood Fiberworks Star Dust yarn in Fingering Weight, specifically the Arcade colorway. The yarn composition is 75% Super Wash Merino Wool, 20% Nylon, and 5% Stellina, providing durability, machine-washability, and subtle sparkle. The project requires 696 yards of yarn, provided in 8 mini skeins that showcase the color progression throughout the shawl.

Knitting is worked on US #3 circular needles in a 32-inch length. The recommended gauge is 24 stitches and 48 rows (24 Garter ridges) over 4 inches in Garter Stitch, which is typical for fingering-weight yarn and produces a fabric with good drape suitable for shawl wear.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, The Shell Game assumes knitters are comfortable with basic stitches, increasing and decreasing, and reading pattern instructions. The shell stitch pattern requires attention but is not overly complex, making this an excellent project for knitters looking to expand their stitch repertoire without tackling advanced techniques.
