Product Description

The Scream by Edvard Munch will not be everyone's favourite picture but this design shows just how subtle illusion knitting can be.

The hanging in the photographs measures approximately 86cm x 114 cm (34” x 45”) using DK yarn and 3.25mm needles and takes approximately 800 metres of each of two contrasting colours of yarn. It has been designed to be viewed from the side so is suitable for use as a wall hanging, bed cover or throw.

You can use any thickness of yarn. Different thicknesses will change the overall size of the piece.

The pattern includes several versions of the chart including one for mobile devices where you can see 20 ridges at a time and always see the numbers underneath.

The Scream Illusion Knitting Wall-Hanging by Steve Plummer

What Is Being Made

The Scream is an illusion knitting wall-hanging design based on Edvard Munch's iconic artwork The Scream of Nature (also known as The Scream or Skrik in Norwegian). This decorative textile piece uses the optical illusion knitting technique to recreate the emotional intensity and visual impact of Munch's original painting, which was created in multiple versions between 1893 and 1910. The wall-hanging can be displayed as a standalone decorative piece or incorporated into larger projects such as afghans.

Illusion Knitting Technique

Illusion knitting is a specialized technique that creates visual images through strategic color placement and stitch manipulation. The pattern works by using two contrasting yarn colors positioned in specific sequences that, when viewed from certain angles or distances, form recognizable images or patterns. This technique relies on the interplay between the two colors and how they interact with the knitted fabric structure to create the optical effect. The Scream design demonstrates how illusion knitting can capture the essence of fine art through textile craftsmanship.

Stitches and Construction

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern information, illusion knitting typically employs basic knit and purl stitches arranged in carefully calculated sequences. The pattern uses two contrasting colors worked throughout the piece to build the illusion effect. The designer recommends working with a tight tension to achieve the best visual results, suggesting that knitters use needles smaller than their typical size for the chosen yarn weight. This tighter gauge ensures the image definition remains sharp and the optical illusion reads clearly.

Yarn and Materials

The Scream wall-hanging was created using Double Knitting (DK) yarn, a versatile 4-ply to 6-ply weight that provides excellent stitch definition. The pattern requires approximately 800 metres of each of two contrasting colors, with extra yardage needed for the border. While the design is shown in DK weight, the pattern notes that it could be worked in alternative yarn weights, though this would affect the overall finished size of the wall-hanging. The choice of yarn weight allows crafters to customize the project dimensions to suit their space and display preferences.

Needles

Needle selection is crucial for achieving the desired illusion effect. The pattern specifically recommends using needles smaller than you would normally pair with your chosen yarn weight. This deliberate choice of undersized needles creates a tighter, denser fabric that enhances the clarity and visual impact of the illusion. For wall-hangings, knitters can work even more tightly if desired, creating a structured piece suitable for display. If the panel is intended for use in an afghan or blanket, a slightly softer tension may be preferred for improved drape and comfort.

Difficulty Level

This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills and some experience with pattern reading and color work. The illusion knitting technique requires attention to detail and careful color placement, but the fundamental stitches involved remain accessible to intermediate-level crafters. Knitters should be comfortable following multi-row patterns and managing two yarn colors throughout the project.
