The Pondoland Square by Jen Tyler
What Is Being Made
The Pondoland Square is a large, decorative floral crochet block designed as a versatile finished piece. Upon completion, a single square functions as a ready-sized cushion cover frontispiece. The design is intentionally created to be joined with other squares for larger projects: nine squares combine to create a lapghan, while twelve squares produce a complete blanket. This modular approach makes the Pondoland Square an adaptable component for multiple finished products.
Design Characteristics
This crochet square features a super-textured surface with intricate floral detailing. The design transitions beautifully across various color palettes, from bohemian and eclectic schemes to classic neutral tones, making it suitable for diverse interior aesthetics and personal style preferences.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Pondoland Square is constructed over 30 rounds plus final finishing rounds, employing traditional crochet techniques to build the textured, dimensional floral block. The pattern progresses through multiple rounds of stitch work, with the construction divided into logical sections: Rounds 1 to 7, Rounds 8 to 12, Rounds 13 to 17, Rounds 18 to 23, Rounds 24 to 29, Round 30, and final rounds. This structured progression allows crocheters to work through the design in manageable segments.
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Pondoland Square is worked with DK weight yarn, providing an appropriate balance of drape and stitch definition for the textured floral design. The pattern is designed to be easily resized by adjusting hook size and yarn weight, allowing crafters to customize the finished square dimensions according to their specific project needs.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch sequences and multi-round construction projects.
Pattern Support
Comprehensive video tutorials accompany the written pattern, covering each major section of the construction process to provide visual guidance throughout the project.
