Product Description

This Little Vampire likes the nightlife! Each vampire only requires small amounts of yarn, so it is a super way to use up any ends of yarn skeins/balls to avoid waste. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the vampire is knitted in acrylic DK yarns. The head, body and cape are worked on single pointed needles (not in the round), and the arms and legs are i-cord tubes worked on two DPNs. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, knitted bobbles for thumbs, plus embroidery and seaming to finish.

The Little Vampire Knitted Doll

What is Being Made

The Little Vampire is an intermediate-level knitted toy doll designed by Amanda Berry. This charming amigurumi-style project creates a small decorative vampire character, perfect for collectors of handmade dolls and accessories. The finished doll is constructed from multiple knitted pieces that are seamed together and stuffed to create a three-dimensional figure with distinctive vampire character details.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters with intermediate experience. The doll is constructed by knitting individual pieces using flat knitting on single-pointed needles, which are then carefully seamed together using a darning needle. Double-pointed needles (DPNs) are also utilized in the pattern, likely for creating smaller components or seamless sections. The construction method allows for color changes across different yarn shades to create the vampire's distinct features and clothing elements.

Stitches and Stitch Work

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern excerpt provided, the project utilizes standard knitting stitches appropriate for toy making. The pattern incorporates color work through yarn changes rather than complex colorwork techniques, making it accessible for intermediate knitters. Embroidery stitches are used to add facial features, including the vampire's characteristic eyes and mouth details using black, red, and white embroidery thread.

Yarn Specifications

Fiber Content: The Little Vampire is knitted using 100% acrylic DK yarns, also known as double knitting or light worsted weight (8 ply). This fiber choice makes the project durable, easy-care, and suitable for toy making.

Yarn Quantities and Colors: The pattern requires only a few grammes of yarn in five different shades. The original design photographed uses Hayfield Bonus DK in the following colors: Black, Light Grey Mix, White, Peaches, and Signal Red. Crafters may substitute with any similar 100% acrylic DK weight yarns in comparable color shades.

Needles and Notions Required

  • One pair of 4mm (US 6) single-pointed needles, minimum length 20cm
  • Two 4mm (US 6) double-pointed needles (DPNs)
  • A darning or tapestry needle for seaming the knitted pieces together
  • Toy filling material for stuffing the completed doll pieces
  • Black, red, and white embroidery thread (up to 1 metre of each color) for adding facial features
  • A sewing needle for embroidery work
