Product Description
I designed/crocheted most of this Shawl on my way to my niece's wedding overseas.
I tried to capture the layover between continents, the flights movements, and my joy to see my niece get married.
I love the airy, fluffy feel of this shawl, and the movements captured by the layover design.
I hope you enjoy making this shawl as much as I did.

The Layover Shawl by Hookoflove
What Is Being Made
The Layover Shawl is an intermediate-level crochet shawl designed by Hookoflove. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a lightweight, elegant shawl suitable for layering over other garments. The shawl features a structured construction that combines multiple stitch techniques to create visual interest and drape.
Craft and Construction Method
This project is worked entirely in crochet, a fiber craft that uses a single hook to create interlocking loops of yarn. The Layover Shawl is constructed using a row-by-row building method, beginning with a foundation chain and progressing through multiple rows of increasing complexity. The pattern uses US crochet terminology and abbreviations, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with American crochet conventions.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Layover Shawl incorporates several fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches:
- Chain (ch) – The foundation stitch that creates the base of the shawl and forms decorative spaces throughout the pattern
- Treble (tr) – A tall stitch used to create the structural framework and spacing of the shawl
- Double Crochet (dc) – A medium-height stitch incorporated into the V-stitch variations
- Double Treble (dtr) – An extra-tall stitch that adds height and creates elegant openwork sections
- V-Stitch Variations – The pattern employs both DcVst (double crochet V-stitch) and DtrVst (double treble V-stitch), which are created by working two stitches separated by a chain space to form a V shape. These stitches create the characteristic lacy, dimensional texture of the shawl
- Yarn Over (YO) – A fundamental technique used to create loops on the hook before drawing yarn through
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Layover Shawl is designed to work with lace and sport weight yarns, offering flexibility in yarn selection. The recommended yarn is Lion Brand Vanna's Glamour® in Platinum, requiring 5 balls for completion. Alternatively, any 2-ply soft yarn suitable for shawls can be substituted, allowing crafters to customize the finished shawl's appearance and drape.
Tools Required
The pattern calls for a US G / 4.00 mm crochet hook, which is sized appropriately for sport and lace weight yarns and creates the correct gauge and fabric density for this intermediate shawl project.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, The Layover Shawl requires familiarity with basic crochet stitches and the ability to follow multi-row pattern instructions. The combination of V-stitches, treble variations, and spacing techniques makes this suitable for crocheters with some experience beyond absolute beginner level.
