The Jura Beanie by Kara Wilson
What Is Being Made
The Jura Beanie is an adult-sized crochet hat designed by Kara Wilson under her independent designer brand Heaven Hooked Crochet. This contemporary crochet design offers a versatile hat pattern suitable for intermediate-level crocheters, with the option to customize the finished look by adding a pom pom if desired.
Yarn Weight Options and Materials
The Jura Beanie pattern accommodates three different yarn weights, allowing makers to choose based on their preferred finished fabric weight and drape. Less than 100 grams of yarn is required regardless of weight choice, making this an economical project. The pattern is written for the following yarn weights:
- DK/Light Worsted Weight – paired with 4mm and 4.5mm crochet hooks
- Aran/Worsted Weight – paired with 5mm and 5.5mm crochet hooks
- Chunky/Bulky Weight – paired with 5.5mm and 6mm crochet hooks
Additional materials needed include scissors, a darning needle for weaving in ends, and an optional pom pom for finishing.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Jura Beanie is written as an intermediate-level project, incorporating a range of fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques. The pattern uses US crochet terminology and is written in English.
Core stitches featured in this design include:
- Chain (CH) – the foundation stitch
- Single Crochet (SC) – a basic, tight stitch
- Single Crochet Back Loop Only (SCBLO) – creates textured ribbing or defined edges
- Single Crochet 2 Together (SC2TOG) – a decrease technique for shaping
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) – a medium-height stitch
- Double Crochet (DC) – a taller stitch for drape and coverage
- Extended Double Crochet (EXDC) – a variation providing additional height
- Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC) – a post stitch creating dimensional texture
- DC 3rd Loop – a special stitch variation detailed in the pattern's special stitches section
The pattern is constructed in rounds (RND), a common method for creating seamless hats. Techniques such as yarn over (YO), skip stitch (SKST), and repeat sequences (marked with asterisks) are used throughout to build the hat's structure and shaping.
Pattern Format and Design Details
The Jura Beanie is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it accessible for immediate use. The pattern is designed for adult size only and includes a comprehensive abbreviations guide and special stitches section that makers should review before beginning their project. The inclusion of designer notes ensures clarity throughout the construction process.
