The Ivy Scarf by TigsTogs
What is Being Made
The Ivy Scarf is a crocheted cowl designed as a one-piece project worked from the bottom up. This cowl measures 30 cm wide and 100 cm long, making it a versatile neckwear accessory suitable for various styling options. The design is created by TigsTogs, an independent designer, and is written specifically for crocheters working in UK crochet terminology.
Difficulty Level and Skill Requirements
This pattern is designed for beginner to intermediate crocheters. To successfully complete The Ivy Scarf, you need foundational knowledge of basic crochet stitches including chain, double crochet, treble, and slip stitch. The pattern does not require precise gauge matching, making it more forgiving for those still developing consistent tension. The bobble edging, which appears decorative along the edges, is constructed using trebles with double crochet stitches placed between them—techniques that can be easily referenced through online video tutorials if needed.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Ivy Scarf employs several fundamental crochet techniques worked in UK crochet terms. The main construction uses the following stitches:
- Chain stitch – used to establish the foundation of the cowl
- Double crochet – forms the base rows and appears between bobbles on the edging
- Treble stitch – creates the primary fabric structure and forms the bobble elements
- Slip stitch – used for joining and finishing
- Cross stitch formation – a decorative technique where trebles are worked in a crossed pattern, created by skipping one stitch and working into the next, then working into the skipped stitch to form an X-like texture
The bobble edging is the signature decorative feature of this design. Rather than complex bobble construction, these are simplified versions made from trebles positioned along the edges with double crochet stitches interspersed between them, creating visual interest without requiring advanced techniques.
Materials and Tools
The Ivy Scarf pattern requires specific materials to achieve the intended finished dimensions and drape:
- Yarn: One 200 g ball of Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 8 ply (DK weight yarn)
- Hooks: Two crochet hooks are needed – a 6.00 mm hook for the cast-on and main body of the cowl, and a 4.50 mm hook for working the bobble edging
The use of two different hook sizes allows for variation in fabric density, with the smaller hook creating a tighter, more defined edging detail compared to the more open drape of the main cowl body worked with the larger hook.
