Product Description

*This is my first pattern published in a magazine (!!!) : you can find it in issue 100 of Inside Crochet… not bad, right? *

I used to decorate our huge Christmas tree in Indonesia with some paper chains and since then I always thought to crochet one or two to have a long-lasting decoration....so I came out with the idea to use some granny rectangles to form the links of my yarn chain…

You can use a lot of colours to crochet yours in any size and  using different yarns : it`s a very versatile project and a good stash buster, too!

Enjoy crocheting,

xxxx Alessandra

The Granny Bunting by Alessandra Poggiagliolmi

What Is Being Made

The Granny Bunting is a decorative yarn chain designed as a long-lasting alternative to traditional paper chains. This crochet project creates a festive garland by linking together small granny-inspired rectangular motifs to form connected loops. The bunting is ideal for holiday decorations, particularly for adorning Christmas trees and other seasonal displays. Unlike typical solid-color crocheted chains found online, this design incorporates colorful granny rectangles that add visual interest and dimension to the finished piece.

Design Inspiration and Development

Designer Alessandra Poggiagliolmi created this pattern as an evolution of an original design first shared on her blog in February 2017. The Granny Bunting represents the second iteration of that concept, refined for publication in Issue 100 of Inside Crochet magazine. The inspiration stems from Poggiagliolmi's experience decorating a large Christmas tree in Indonesia with paper chains, which sparked the idea to develop a durable crocheted version. The designer's research revealed that existing knitted and crocheted paper chains were predominantly made in solid colors, prompting her to innovate by incorporating traditional granny square motifs adapted into rectangular links.

Techniques and Construction Methods

This intermediate-level crochet project employs several key techniques to construct the bunting. The pattern utilizes a foundation chain as the base for each rectangular granny motif. The links are then joined together to form a continuous yarn chain, similar in appearance to a paper chain but with enhanced durability. The joining method differs between the original blog version and this published pattern version, offering refinement in how the rectangular links connect to one another. The use of multiple colors throughout the project allows crafters to create vibrant, multi-hued bunting that showcases color variation across the entire length of the garland.

Stitches Used

The Granny Bunting employs traditional granny square crochet stitches adapted for rectangular shapes. These classic motifs form the foundation of each link in the bunting chain. The pattern incorporates standard crochet techniques typical of granny-style construction, creating the characteristic openwork appearance associated with this timeless design element.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

  • Yarn Weight: DK (Double Knit) weight yarn, providing a medium thickness suitable for creating defined rectangular motifs with good stitch definition
  • Yarn: Multiple colors can be used throughout the project to create a vibrant, multi-colored bunting effect
  • Hook: A crochet hook appropriate for DK weight yarn (typically a size E/3.5mm to F/3.75mm, though specific hook size should be verified in the complete pattern)

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate project, The Granny Bunting is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are comfortable working with granny square motifs and basic joining techniques. The project builds on essential crochet knowledge while introducing the creative challenge of linking multiple motifs into a cohesive decorative piece.
