The Graces Cardigan by Corrine Walcher
What is Being Made
The Graces Cardigan is a sophisticated, top-down knitted cardigan designed by Corrine Walcher. This versatile garment features a v-neck construction with raglan sleeves and is distinguished by a leafy ribbed lace skirt section. The pattern offers flexibility with both short sleeve and long sleeve options included, making it adaptable to different seasons and personal preferences. The cardigan is available in six sizes ranging from 32 inches to 52 inches chest circumference, with customizable length that allows knitters to adjust the finished garment to their exact specifications by trying it on as they progress.
Design Features and Customization
One of the standout characteristics of The Graces Cardigan is its built-in customization capability. Knitters can try the cardigan on as they work and stop increasing when the fit is perfect, eliminating the guesswork often involved in garment construction. The pattern also offers the option to knit a matching top, creating a coordinated twin set. Finished measurements include chest sizes of 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, and 52 inches, with corresponding sleeve circumferences ranging from 12.75 to 17.75 inches. Standard length measurements from underarm to hem range from 14 to 17 inches depending on size, though length is customizable based on individual preference.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Graces Cardigan employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques. The top-down construction method allows for fitting adjustments throughout the knitting process, a technique favored by experienced knitters seeking precision fit. The raglan sleeve shaping creates a smooth, elegant line from neckline to cuff. The leafy ribbed lace skirt incorporates lace patterning, which adds visual interest and texture to the lower portion of the garment while maintaining structural integrity through ribbed sections.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The pattern utilizes ribbed stitches as a foundational structural element, particularly in the sleeve cuffs and the ribbed lace skirt section. Lace stitching is featured prominently in the skirt, creating an openwork leafy design that provides an elegant, feminine aesthetic. The combination of ribbed and lace stitches requires intermediate knitting skill to execute properly, as lace work demands attention to yarn overs and decreases to create the characteristic openwork patterns.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Graces Cardigan is designed to be worked in Savvy Skeins Sophisticate Sock yarn, a 3-ply and 4-ply weight option. The recommended yarn is 100% Superwash Merino wool, offering durability and easy care properties. Yardage requirements are 438 yards per 100-gram skein, with pattern requirements ranging from 2 to 3 skeins depending on size. The sample cardigan shown was worked in the Chai colorway. Knitters should note that long sleeve options will require additional yardage beyond the stated requirements.
Needles and Tools
The pattern calls for US #6/4.00mm circular needles measuring 32 inches or longer. Knitters working larger sizes may prefer to use longer needles to accommodate the increased stitch count comfortably. The use of circular needles facilitates the top-down construction method and allows for seamless knitting in the round, a technique that contributes to the polished finish of the completed garment.
Difficulty Level
The Graces Cardigan is rated as an intermediate-level knitting project. This difficulty classification reflects the combination of techniques required: top-down raglan construction, lace patterning, and the need to manage shaping while maintaining stitch integrity. Knitters should have solid foundational skills in increases, decreases, and basic lace work before undertaking this project.
