The Cocoon Scarf or Stole by Andrea Jurgrau
What Is Being Made
The Cocoon Scarf or Stole is an elegant knitted accessory designed by Andrea Jurgrau as part of the BadCatDesigns Metamorphosis Project Winter 2011 collection. This versatile pattern allows crafters to create three different finished pieces depending on yardage: a delicate scarf, a larger scarf, or a generous stole. The sample featured in the pattern was constructed as a delicate scarf measuring 7 inches wide and 48 inches long, showcasing the graceful drape and refined aesthetic of this design.
Yarn and Materials
The Cocoon Scarf or Stole is worked using lace or fingering weight yarn, with yardage requirements scaled to the desired finished piece. A delicate scarf requires 25 grams (220 yards), a larger scarf needs 50 grams (440 yards), and a full stole requires 100 grams (880 yards). The sample was created using 220 yards of hand-dyed 2-ply merino yarn in lace weight, demonstrating the luxurious fiber content suitable for this design.
Optional embellishment includes approximately 20 grams of matching beads, though the exact quantity depends on the width and length of your finished piece. The original sample was made without beads, allowing the yarn and stitch pattern to be the primary visual focus.
Tools and Equipment
- US 2 single-point knitting needle (or appropriate size to achieve desired appearance in your chosen yarn)
- US 12 crochet hook (or one sized to accommodate beads if using them)
- Waste yarn for provisional cast-on
- Stitch markers (optional)
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Blocking supplies for finishing
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced-level knitting pattern employs sophisticated construction methods appropriate for experienced knitters. The design utilizes a provisional cast-on technique, which allows stitches to be picked up later for a refined, finished edge—a hallmark of professional lace knitting.
The pattern is worked in stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base, which provides a smooth, elegant canvas for the design. Lace-weight yarn combined with stockinette stitch creates an exceptionally delicate and fluid drape, essential for the cocoon silhouette.
The inclusion of a crochet hook in the materials list suggests that crochet techniques may be incorporated into the finishing or embellishment of the piece, particularly if beads are added. This combination of knitting and crochet techniques demonstrates the pattern's sophisticated construction approach.
Gauge and Sizing
Gauge is noted as not critical for this design, offering flexibility to knitters. The designer's sample achieved a gauge of 6 stitches to an inch in stockinette stitch after blocking. This flexibility in gauge makes the pattern more accessible while still maintaining the intended aesthetic character of the piece.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as advanced, making it ideal for experienced knitters who are comfortable with techniques such as provisional cast-ons, lace-weight yarn handling, and the precision required for delicate garment construction. The advanced designation reflects both the technical skills needed and the refined execution expected in the finished piece.
