Textured Wrist Warmers by Gloria Miller
Project Overview
The Textured Wrist Warmers are beginner-friendly fingerless gloves designed to keep your hands warm while leaving fingers free for dexterity and movement. This crochet project uses basic stitches to create a textured fabric that offers both visual interest and functional warmth. The pattern is sized to fit small, medium, and large hands, making it accessible for various wearers.
What Is Being Made
These fingerless gloves, also called wrist warmers, are crocheted tubes that cover the hand from the wrist to just below the knuckles. The open-finger design allows full use of your hands while the wrist and palm area remain insulated. The sizing is based on knuckle measurement, with three options: Small (7 inches / 18 cm), Medium (7.5 inches / 19 cm), and Large (8 inches / 21 cm around the knuckles.
Crochet Techniques Used
This beginner-level pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for those new to the craft. The construction uses rounds worked in the round, creating a seamless tubular structure. The pattern incorporates texture through strategic stitch placement and variation, particularly using back bump techniques to create visual dimension and tactile interest in the finished fabric.
Stitches Used
- Chain (CH) – The foundation stitch used to begin the project
- Slip Stitch (SL ST) – Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
- Single Crochet (SC) – A basic short stitch that creates a dense, tight fabric
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) – A medium-height stitch that provides structure and drape
- Double Crochet (DC) – A taller stitch used for texture and coverage
- Double Crochet, Back Bump Only (DC BBO) – A specialized technique that creates textured ridges by working only into the back loop of stitches
Materials and Yarn
This project requires minimal yardage, using less than one skein of yarn. The pattern calls for Worsted Weight Yarn, also referred to as Aran weight, which is a medium-weight yarn that works up quickly and creates a fabric with good structure and drape. The designer used Stylecraft Special Aran in the Meadow colourway for the sample project. A 5mm crochet hook is paired with the aran-weight yarn to achieve the correct gauge and fabric density. Additional materials include a tape measure for sizing, scissors for cutting yarn, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of eight stitches measured over 2 inches using rounds 4 through 9 of the pattern. Checking gauge before beginning ensures your finished wrist warmers will fit properly. The pattern provides clear instructions for all three sizes in parentheses, allowing you to customize the fit based on your knuckle measurement.
Pattern Format and Instructions
This is a downloadable PDF pattern that includes both US and UK crochet terminology, making it accessible to crocheters in different regions. The pattern is written for beginners, with clear stitch definitions and abbreviations provided at the start. The straightforward construction and minimal materials make this an ideal first fingerless glove project.
