Product Description
These delicate fingerless gloves are worked with two strands of laceweight yarn held together.
The body of the mitts are worked in a textured Tunisian Crochet Honeycomb stitch, and the thumb is worked in the contrasting Tunisian Knit Stitch.
The Mitts are worked flat and then joined together with a flat crochet slip stitch seam.
MATERIALS: 4.5mm Tunisian Crochet Hook, 3.5mm Crochet Hook, Approximately 130 yards each of 2 laceweight yarns in A and B
This pattern requires 2 strands of Laceweight yarn to be held together. One yarn will need one to be a smooth texture such as Alpaca, and the other will need to be a fluffy texture such as a Mohair, to create a cosy texture.
The yarns don’t have to be the same colour, they can be 2 different colours, as when they are held together, they will create a new colour. See the examples in the photos which show the different yarn combinations I have used to create 3 different results, all using the same yarn for Yarn A.
Textured Tunisian Mitts by Hayley Robinson
What Is Being Made
The Textured Tunisian Mitts are delicate and cosy fingerless gloves designed by Hayley Joanne Robinson. These mitts feature a finished wrist circumference of 18cm (7 inches), hand circumference of 18.5cm (7.25 inches), and length of 15.25cm (6 inches), making them a practical accessory for keeping hands warm while maintaining finger mobility.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet project employs Tunisian Crochet techniques throughout, which combine elements of traditional crochet and knitting for a distinctive fabric texture. The mitts are worked flat in separate pieces and then joined together using a flat crochet slip stitch seam, creating a clean, professional finish.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes several Tunisian crochet stitches to create visual and textural interest:
- Tunisian Crochet Honeycomb Stitch – forms the textured body of the mitts with a distinctive honeycomb appearance
- Tunisian Knit Stitch (Tks) – worked in a contrasting yarn for the thumb section, providing visual definition
- Tunisian Simple Stitch (Tss) – foundational stitch used in Tunisian crochet construction
- Tunisian Purl Stitch (Tps) – adds additional textural variation
- Tunisian Full Stitch (Tfs) – contributes to the overall fabric structure
Materials and Tools
The Textured Tunisian Mitts require approximately 260 yards total of Laceweight yarn, divided into two contrasting colors: approximately 130 yards of Laceweight yarn in Color A (smooth fibre) and approximately 130 yards of Laceweight yarn in Color B (fluffy fibre). The two strands are held together throughout the project to create the desired fabric weight and texture.
Essential tools include a 4.5mm Tunisian Crochet Hook as the primary hook for constructing the mitts, and a 3.5mm Crochet Hook for finishing details. Additional supplies needed are a yarn needle for weaving in ends, measuring tape or ruler for checking gauge and sizing, and scissors.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 stitches by 11 rows over 5cm (2 inches) when worked with the recommended materials and hook size. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions of the mitts.
