What is Being Made

Textured Shortie Sox is a downloadable knitting pattern for short socks designed by Annette Traves. This intermediate-level project creates a pair of socks featuring textured stitch work and comes in multiple size options to accommodate different foot measurements.

Craft and Techniques

This pattern uses knitting as the primary craft method. The socks are constructed using the Magic loop technique or double-pointed needles (dpns), allowing knitters to work in the round to create seamless sock construction. The pattern begins with a German twisted cast on, which the designer recommends for creating a secure, non-restrictive cuff edge that remains elastic and comfortable when wearing.

Working in the round is essential for sock knitting, as it eliminates the need for seaming and creates a continuous fabric. The designer notes the importance of maintaining appropriate tension during the cast-on phase to ensure the finished sock remains wearable and comfortable on the foot.

Stitches Used

The pattern features a textured stitch pattern that begins with a 2x2 ribbed cuff (knit 2, purl 2 repeat). This ribbing creates elasticity and helps the sock stay in place on the leg. The textured elements throughout the sock add visual interest and depth to the finished garment.

Materials

The pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which is ideal for creating fitted, detailed socks. Two colorway versions are provided:

• Version 1 (Dark): Colour A uses Third Vault Yarns MAKE 2 Companion 4ply in the Daughter of the Vulvani shade (a GoF club colourway), paired with Colour B from Easyknits Deeply Wicked in Lemoncello
• Version 2 (Light): Colour A features Lay Family Yarn Sock yarn in Midnight Butterfly, combined with Colour B from It's a Stitch Up Favourite Sock mini in Traffic Cone

The pattern requires 2.5mm (US 1.5) long circular needles for the Magic loop technique or 2.5mm (US 1.5) double-pointed needles as an alternative. A small stitch marker is needed to denote the beginning of each round. A tapestry needle is also recommended for finishing work.

Sizing and Specifications

The pattern is offered in three size options with stitch counts of 56, 64, and 72 stitches, allowing customization based on foot circumference and personal fit preferences.
