Tessellated Triangles Sweater by Alexandra EyeLoveKnots

What Is Being Made

The Tessellated Triangles Sweater is a crocheted pullover garment featuring a distinctive geometric tessellation pattern composed of triangles across the body. This intermediate-level crochet project combines colorwork with textural techniques to create a visually striking sweater design.

Primary Crochet Techniques

This pattern employs several specialized crochet techniques to achieve its unique aesthetic:

  • Back Loop Single Crochet: The designer works exclusively into the back loop when executing the single crochet stitches. This technique creates enhanced texture and dimensional interest while simultaneously serving functional purposes—it makes aligning the triangle pattern more manageable and effectively conceals the secondary color yarn behind the stitches, preventing it from showing on the right side of the finished fabric.
  • Tapestry Crochet: The sweater incorporates tapestry crochet methods to integrate the tessellated triangle colorwork pattern throughout the body of the garment.
  • Shaping Modifications: The designer notes that a different construction approach was necessary when reaching the underarm sections, indicating thoughtful shaping techniques adapted for the colorwork pattern.

Stitches Used

Single crochet forms the foundation of this pattern, worked consistently into the back loop to build both structure and texture while maintaining the integrity of the two-color tessellated triangle design.

Materials

This pattern is designed to be worked with worsted weight yarn and appropriate crochet hooks sized for the yarn weight being used.

Design Inspiration and Construction Notes

Alexandra EyeLoveKnots originally created this sweater design for a magazine feature centered on sweater patterns. The tessellated triangle motif emerged as the primary design element for the garment body. The designer specifically chose back loop single crochet tapestry techniques to overcome common frustrations with traditional single crochet tapestry work, resulting in a more enjoyable construction experience and a cleaner finished appearance. The pattern addresses the technical challenge of maintaining the geometric pattern while shaping the sweater at the underarms through modified construction methods.
