Teela Socks by Tracey Lee
What is Being Made
Teela socks are a pair of hand-knitted socks designed by independent designer Tracey Lee. Named after a colourful variety of dabbling duck, these socks are specifically engineered to showcase multicoloured and hand-dyed yarns while preventing the common pooling effect that can occur with variegated colorways. The finished socks fit various foot circumferences and feature a classic construction from cuff to toe.
Knitting Techniques
Teela socks employ several fundamental sock-knitting techniques to create a well-fitting, durable garment:
- Small circumference knitting: The pattern is worked on needles sized 2.5mm (US1.5) or as required to achieve proper gauge, using the knitter's preferred style for working small circumferences, such as double-pointed needles or circular needles
- Slipped rib cuff: The sock begins with a slipped rib cuff that provides elasticity and a polished edge
- Heel flap construction: A traditional heel flap is worked to create structure and durability in this high-wear area
- Dutch heel turn: The heel turn uses the Dutch method, a popular technique that creates a smooth, fitted heel cup
- Rounded toe shaping: The sock concludes with rounded toe shaping for comfort and a professional finish
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates essential knitting stitches and abbreviations:
- Knit (K): The fundamental stitch that forms the base fabric
- Purl (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to create texture
- Knit 2 together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used in shaping
- Purl 2 together (P2tog): A decrease worked on purl stitches
- Slip stitch knitwise, return to left needle, knit 2 together (SSK): A left-leaning decrease for balanced shaping
- Slip stitch (S): Used in heel flap construction and stitch manipulation
- Stocking stitch: The primary fabric base that creates a smooth, elastic surface
Textured Stitch Pattern
The defining feature of Teela socks is an all-over texture stitch worked in stocking stitch that begins on the leg below the cuff and continues across the instep. This textured fabric serves a dual purpose: it creates visual interest and breaks up colour pooling that commonly occurs in multicoloured and hand-dyed yarns, while simultaneously producing a lovely springy, elastic fabric that provides comfort and recovery during wear.
Yarn and Materials
Teela socks are designed for 4-ply yarn weight, making them suitable for fingering-weight or sock-weight yarns. The pattern is particularly well-suited to hand-dyed yarns and multicoloured colourways, as the texture stitch actively prevents pooling. The sample shown was knitted in Noble Fox Yarns Premium in the colourway Prince Peacock. Needles required are 2.5mm (US1.5) or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 36 stitches and 48 rows over 10 centimetres (4 inches) in stocking stitch. Multiple sizes are provided to fit various foot circumferences, allowing knitters to customize the fit for different wearers.
Difficulty Level
Teela socks are rated as a beginner level pattern, making them an excellent introduction to sock knitting. While the pattern includes traditional sock construction techniques such as heel flaps and Dutch heel turns, the straightforward stitch work and clear abbreviations make it accessible to knitters new to small circumference knitting and sock construction.
