Knitted Teddy Bear Pattern by Amanda Berry in Deramores Studio DK Acrylic

This charming knitted teddy bear pattern by designer Amanda Berry is a downloadable PDF available exclusively from Deramores. Rated as intermediate in difficulty, this project produces an adorable stuffed toy bear standing approximately 19cm tall when sitting. The pattern is a wonderful introduction to knitted toy construction, combining classic shaping techniques with simple finishing details to create a huggable, three-dimensional character full of personality.

Please note: This finished toy is not suitable for children under 3 years of age due to small parts, including toy safety eyes.

What Is Being Made

The finished project is a knitted stuffed teddy bear, worked in the round and flat sections, then assembled and filled with toy stuffing to create a soft, sculptural toy. The bear is designed to sit upright at 19cm tall, making it an ideal gift, display piece, or collector's knitted toy. The two-colour design uses Deramores Studio DK in Latte (Yarn A) for the main body and Deramores Studio DK in French Rouge (Yarn B) as a contrast colour, giving the bear a warm, classic aesthetic. A small amount of Deramores Studio DK in Ebony is used to embroider the nose, adding a sweet finishing touch.

Yarn and Materials Used

  • Yarn: Deramores Studio DK — a DK weight acrylic yarn used throughout the pattern
  • Yarn A: Deramores Studio DK in Latte — 1 x 100g ball (main body colour)
  • Yarn B: Deramores Studio DK in French Rouge — 1 x 100g ball (contrast colour)
  • Embroidery yarn: Deramores Studio DK in Ebony — approximately 1 metre for the nose
  • Knitting needles: A pair of 2.75mm straight knitting needles
  • Extras: Two 10mm black toy safety eyes, approximately 200g toy filling, stitch markers, pins for making up, and a darning or tapestry needle for seaming and embroidery

Tension

The pattern requires a tension of 28 stitches x 36 rows to measure 10 x 10cm over stockinette stitch using 2.75mm needles. Achieving the correct tension is particularly important in toy knitting, as it ensures the fabric is dense enough to hold the toy filling securely without the stuffing showing through the stitches. Knitters are encouraged to swatch before beginning.

Techniques and Construction

This pattern uses a range of knitting techniques suited to an intermediate knitter. The bear is constructed in separate pieces — including the body, head, limbs, and ears — which are then seamed together and stuffed. This modular approach to toy making allows for precise shaping of each individual component before the final assembly brings the character to life.

  • Stockinette stitch (st st): The primary fabric used throughout the bear, created by alternating knit rows on the right side and purl rows on the wrong side. This produces a smooth, even surface ideal for toy construction.
  • Reverse stockinette stitch (rev st st): Used for textural contrast in certain sections, this technique reverses the standard stockinette so the purl side faces outward, creating a slightly bumpy, tactile surface.
  • Kfb (Knit into the front and back): A common increase technique used to add stitches and shape the rounded, three-dimensional forms of the bear's body parts such as the head and tummy.
  • K2tog (Knit 2 together): A right-leaning decrease used to reduce stitch counts and taper the shaped sections of the toy neatly.
  • P2tog (Purl 2 together): A decrease worked on purl rows, used in conjunction with K2tog to maintain smooth shaping on both sides of the fabric.
  • Seaming and making up: A darning or tapestry needle is
