Product Description
This pattern solves the problem of your shortie socks slipping down into your shoes. The heel tab gives you that little bit of extra fabric while the hemmed cuff stays low in your shoe.
This pattern includes both cuff down and toe up instructions.
For Self-striping sock yarn: You may prefer a short row heel that does not require you to knit across the instep stitches. I would suggest Roxanne Richardson’s video on three ways to do a short row heel.
Tabby Tug Socks Pattern Summary
What is Being Made
The Tabby Tug Socks, also known as Heel Tab Socks, are a pair of fitted socks designed by Mindy D. Asplin. This downloadable knitting pattern creates socks in three sizes: Small (56 stitches), Medium (64 stitches), and Large (72 stitches). The pattern is suitable for adventurous beginners through experienced knitters who have intermediate-level skills and familiarity with advanced sock construction techniques.
Techniques and Construction Methods
The Tabby Tug Socks employ several specialized knitting techniques that distinguish them from basic sock patterns. The pattern utilizes a crochet provisional cast on, which creates a flexible, reversible edge ideal for sock construction. The heel is worked using two advanced short-row techniques: the W&T method (wrap and turn) and the German short row technique, both of which create a smooth, fitted heel without gaps or holes. The pattern also incorporates grafting with a whipped stitch hem, a finishing method that creates an invisible seam for a professional appearance. These techniques require knitters to be comfortable with increases, decreases, and short-row shaping.
Stitches Used
The core stitches employed in this pattern include:
- Knit stitch - the fundamental stitch forming the fabric base
- Purl stitch - used for texture and stitch definition
- Increases (Inc) - for shaping the sock structure
- Decreases (Dec) - for tapering and shaping
- Short rows - specifically W&T and German short row techniques for heel construction
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Tabby Tug Socks pattern requires 50 to 60 grams of fingering weight sock yarn, making it an efficient project that uses minimal yardage. The pattern calls for US 1.5 (2.50mm) circular needles, which can be worked using either two circular needles or the magic loop method on a single long circular needle. A US E/4 (3.50mm) crochet hook is needed specifically for creating the provisional cast-on chain. Additional materials include fingering weight scrap yarn for the provisional cast on, two different colored stitch markers (bulb markers are recommended), and a darning needle for weaving in ends. The recommended gauge is 8.5 stitches and 12 rows per inch in stockinette stitch, which ensures the finished socks will fit properly and have the intended drape and elasticity.
