Product Description
PROBABLY MY FAVOURITE CABLE….
The pattern contains instructions for a Jacket and Traditional hat to fit 18″, 20″ , 22" and 24″ chest and the end product is larger as it is a jacket. By extending the length of the arms and body on the largest size, it would easily fit a 3-4 year old. Some experience is required. Knitted on straight needles
This pattern is a lot easier than it looks. The pattern consists of 12 rows of which only one is where you need to cable so it is a lot faster than usual to knit up! I found this particular technique of cabling when I was looking for something else on YouTube. It was in a foreign language; I have absolutely no idea from where, and I watched the video over and over until I understood! I just love the unusual cable and think the rib shows it off particularly well. I intend to experiment with the cable in the future to see what I can create!
Sylvia Parker Aran Pattern for Baby Cardigan
Project Overview
The Sylvia Parker Aran Pattern for Baby is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Donna Anderson for creating a baby cardigan. This intermediate-level project uses aran-weight yarn and traditional cable knitting techniques to produce a garment with classic texture and visual interest. The cardigan is designed with a wider fit than standard baby jackets, making it suitable for layering or comfortable wear.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a baby cardigan featuring aran-weight yarn construction. The garment is intentionally designed with a roomier silhouette compared to typical baby jackets, allowing for comfortable movement and layering underneath. The cardigan showcases traditional aran stitch patterns that create dimensional texture across the body.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Sylvia Parker pattern employs several foundational and intermediate knitting techniques:
- Cable knitting: The pattern features cable stitches worked using a cable needle. Stitches are held at the front of the work while subsequent stitches are knitted, then the held stitches are returned and knitted in sequence, creating the characteristic twisted rope effect typical of aran patterns.
- Moss stitch: A textured stitch created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a specific sequence, providing visual interest and a slightly raised surface texture.
- Increases and decreases: The pattern uses make-one increases (created by picking up the thread between stitches and knitting through the back loop) and various decrease methods to shape the garment.
- Yarn overs: These create decorative openings and are incorporated into the stitch pattern.
- Slip stitches: Used in decrease sequences and pattern transitions to move stitches without knitting them directly.
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates the following core stitches and stitch combinations:
- Knit and purl stitches: The fundamental building blocks, used individually and in combination.
- Knit 1, purl 1 ribbing: Likely used for cuffs, hems, or edge finishing to create elasticity and a neat border.
- Moss stitch: An alternating knit-purl pattern that creates a bumpy, textured fabric.
- Cable stitches: Complex stitches involving the cable needle technique, with specific sequences such as slipping 6 stitches onto a cable needle, holding at front, working 4 stitches in a knit 1, purl 2, knit 1 sequence, then returning and working the remaining cable needle stitches.
- Decrease sequences: Including slip-knit-pass-over decreases and purl-slip-knit-pass-over variations for left-leaning and right-leaning decreases.
- Yarn over increases: For creating openwork details or shaping.
Materials and Gauge
This pattern is worked in aran-weight yarn on 5mm needles, which is the standard pairing for this yarn weight. The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10 centimeters (4 inches) measured over the moss stitch on 5mm needles. Achieving correct gauge is essential for the cardigan to fit properly as designed. The pattern includes size-specific instructions, with some sizes having no stitches or row counts for particular sections, indicating a graduated sizing system.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle cable work and more complex stitch sequences. The combination of moss stitch, cable techniques, and shaping requires attention to pattern instructions and comfort with reading knitting abbreviations and charts.
