This top-down capelet is worked flat with raglan style increases along the shoulders.

I used just under one full skein of Teeny Button Studio in The Owlery but any light fingering weight will do!

Should you want it to be longer than my sample (for reference, I'm 5'3" and have a bust of ~41") then you may need more yarn.

Techniques used: long-tail cast-on

Swish and Flick Capelet by Laura Dupuis

What is Being Made

The Swish and Flick Capelet is a lightweight, flowing shoulder piece designed to drape elegantly around the shoulders. This beginner-friendly knitting pattern creates a garment that floats gracefully, reminiscent of a feather in motion. The capelet is worked from the top down in a flat construction, making it an accessible project for knitters new to garment construction.

Design and Construction Techniques

This pattern employs a top-down construction method worked flat on circular needles, which allows for easy customization and fitting as you work. The capelet features raglan-style increases that create the shaping needed for the shoulder area. This technique distributes increases evenly across the piece, resulting in a balanced, proportional fit. The design is intentionally simple, making it ideal for beginners while still producing a sophisticated finished garment. The pattern is written with custom fitting options, allowing you to adjust the length and overall dimensions to suit your preferences.

Stitches Used

The Swish and Flick Capelet utilizes fundamental knitting stitches that form the foundation of most knit garments:

  • Knit (K) - The primary stitch creating the fabric structure
  • Purl (P) - Used in combination with knit stitches
  • Knit Front and Back (KFB) - An increase technique used to create the raglan shaping
  • Cast On (CO) - The foundation row method
  • Slip Marker (SM) and Place Marker (PM) - Techniques for tracking pattern sections and increases

The main fabric is worked in stockinette stitch, a classic knit pattern that creates a smooth, polished appearance perfect for showcasing yarn texture and drape.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This capelet is an excellent stash-busting project, requiring approximately 1-2 skeins of size 1 Fingering weight yarn, depending on your desired finished length. The sample garment was created using one skein of Teeny Button Studio Soft Sock yarn (463 yards total), in the colorway The Owlery. Fingering weight yarn at this yardage creates a delicate, refined fabric suitable for a shoulder piece.

The pattern calls for US5/3.75mm circular needles measuring 32 inches (81 centimeters), or the size needed to achieve proper gauge. Additional notions include scissors, a darning needle for weaving in ends, two stitch markers for tracking increases, and one button or clasp for closure.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 20 stitches by 28 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch, measured flat and unblocked. This gauge is typical for fingering weight yarn and ensures the capelet will have the intended drape and fit. Achieving proper gauge is essential for this fitted shoulder garment.

Skill Level

Rated as a Beginner difficulty level, this pattern is accessible to knitters new to garment construction. The straightforward top-down, flat construction method and simple stitch vocabulary make it an ideal introduction to shaping techniques and wearable design.
