Sweet Sachet by Terry Morris

Project Overview

The Sweet Sachet is a charming handmade gift project designed to hold aromatic fillings. This small decorative pillow combines knitted squares with crochet edging to create a finished 4-inch square sachet. The project is ideal for gifting to friends, co-workers, and family members, and allows for personalization through choice of fragrant materials.

What Is Being Made

This project creates a small decorative sachet pillow constructed from two knitted squares joined together with crochet edging. The sachet is designed to be filled with aromatics and finished with satin ribbon for hanging or decoration. The final dimensions are approximately 4 inches square including the edging.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The body of the Sweet Sachet is worked using the Eyelet & Garter Ridge pattern, a four-row repeating stitch pattern that creates both visual texture and functional openings. This pattern combines multiple knitting techniques:

  • Purl stitches form the foundation rows, creating a smooth texture on the reverse side
  • Garter stitch (knit rows) provides structure and definition
  • Yarn overs (YO) create decorative eyelet holes that add visual interest and allow fragrance to escape
  • Slip stitch decrease (SSK) balances the yarn overs and maintains stitch count

Each knitted square begins with a cast-on of 19 stitches and repeats the four-row pattern eight times before binding off. Two identical squares are created to form the front and back of the sachet.

Crochet Finishing

The two knitted squares are joined using crochet slip stitch edging. The squares are held with wrong sides together, and a crochet hook is used to work slip stitches through the edges of both layers simultaneously, creating a finished border while enclosing the interior space.

Materials and Tools

This project uses fine materials appropriate for delicate work:

  • DMC Perle cotton floss size 5 (100% cotton, 27 yards per skein) — one skein provides sufficient yardage for both knitted squares
  • US size 2 (2.25mm) knitting needles for working the knitted body
  • Size B or 1 (2.25mm) crochet hook for the slip stitch edging
  • Satin ribbon, ¼ inch wide and 1 yard long, for decoration and hanging
  • Cotton or satin fabric, a small piece measuring 4 inches by 8 inches, for creating an interior pillow
  • Sewing supplies including needle, thread, and/or sewing machine for assembling the interior pillow and attaching ribbon

Filling Options

The sachet's interior can be customized with various aromatic materials:

  • Potpourri
  • Cedar chips
  • Cotton stuffing scented with essential oils
  • Crushed herbs and spices

Difficulty Level

This project is rated as advanced, reflecting the combination of techniques required. Crafters must be comfortable with knitting fundamentals including cast-on, purl and knit stitches, yarn overs, decreases, and bind-off. Additionally, basic crochet slip stitch knowledge and hand-sewing skills are necessary to complete the project successfully.
