When I first tried this beautiful recycled cotton yarn I had to design a project especially for it. As I have such a love of blankets it was a very easy decision, so very quickly my Sweet Posy Blanket was born. I love it and hope you enjoy making it, the cotton yarn gives it a lovely texture and stitch definition. It works up really quickly so I hope it will become one of your favourite makes.
The Sweet Posy Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet throw designed by Sue Rawlinson. This rectangular blanket measures 110 centimeters by 168 centimeters, making it an ideal size for a cozy lap throw or bed accent. The design features a repeating pattern worked in five coordinating yarn colors that create a harmonious, multi-colored finished piece suitable for various home décor styles.
This project creates a substantial crochet blanket using a structured pattern repeat system. The blanket is constructed by working rows in a consistent sequence, with color changes strategically placed throughout the pattern to build visual interest. The finished dimensions of 110cm x 168cm provide generous coverage, making this blanket suitable for draping over furniture, using as a throw, or displaying as a decorative textile piece.
The Sweet Posy Blanket employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners while creating a polished final product. The pattern utilizes repeating row sequences that allow crafters to develop rhythm and consistency in their work. Color changes are incorporated throughout the pattern, requiring basic yarn management skills. The tension is noted as non-critical for this project, making it forgiving and accessible for newer crocheters who may still be developing consistent stitch tension.
The blanket is worked using a 19-row pattern repeat that cycles throughout the project. The instructions indicate that certain rows are worked "as" previous rows, creating an efficient pattern system where crafters work variations of established row sequences. Color changes occur at strategic points within the pattern repeat, with yarn changes integrated into the final stitch of specified rows. This structured approach makes the pattern manageable for beginners while building a complex-looking final design.
Yarn: The Sweet Posy Blanket uses Paintbox Yarn Recycled Worsted in five distinct colors. Recycled worsted weight yarn provides durability and sustainability while offering excellent stitch definition. The yarn requirements include:
Tools and Notions: The project requires a 5mm crochet hook for the main fabric and a 4mm crochet hook for finishing details. A tapestry needle is used to weave in yarn tails and neaten the finished edges. Basic scissors complete the tool requirements.
This blanket is worked in aran and worsted weight yarns, which are medium-weight options that work up at a moderate pace. Worsted weight yarn creates a fabric with good drape and structure, ideal for blanket projects. The use of Paintbox Yarn Recycled Worsted demonstrates a commitment to sustainable crafting, as recycled yarn reduces environmental impact while maintaining the quality and performance expected in finished blankets. The five-color palette—Steel Blue, String, Peachy, Honey, and Sea Green—creates a sophisticated, nature-inspired color scheme.
Classified as a beginner project, the Sweet Posy Blanket is designed to be accessible to newer crocheters. The non-critical tension requirement removes pressure for perfection, allowing crafters to focus on learning and enjoying the process. The repeating pattern structure helps build muscle memory and confidence. Despite its beginner classification, the finished blanket presents a polished, professional appearance suitable for gifting or personal use.
