Product Description

Eirene is the Greek goddess of peace. My grandmother, of the same name, was an incredibly peaceful, charming, sweet and very funny lady. Sweet Eirene was created in her memory.

This is a comfortable first lace project for newcomers to lace knitting, and interesting enough for more experienced knitters.

The crescent shawl is written in two different sizes and was knit in two yarn weights. It is worked using the following stitches: knit, purl, k2tog, p2tog, p3tog, ssk, yarn over, and a central double decrease, plus, a super easy short row method.

Whichever version you choose I hope you enjoy knitting Sweet Eirene as much as I enjoyed creating it!

Sweet Eirene Shawl by Patty Olson Designs

About This Design

Sweet Eirene is a crescent shawl knitting pattern created by Patty Olson Designs as a tribute to the designer's grandmother, Eirene, named after the Greek goddess of peace. This intermediate-level knitting project offers an accessible introduction to lace knitting for newcomers while remaining engaging for experienced knitters. The pattern is available in two distinct versions, each offering different yarn weight options and finished dimensions.

What Is Being Made

Sweet Eirene is a crescent-shaped shawl, a versatile garment that drapes elegantly across the shoulders. The crescent silhouette is a popular shawl style that provides generous coverage while maintaining a lightweight, graceful aesthetic. This design is worked in two different sizes, allowing knitters to customize the finished dimensions according to their preferences.

Knitting Techniques Used

The pattern employs a short row method to create the crescent shaping, using a straightforward approach that is accessible to intermediate knitters. This technique allows the shawl to curve naturally without requiring complex construction methods. The short row shaping creates the characteristic crescent form while maintaining consistent stitch definition throughout the piece.

Stitches and Stitch Work

Sweet Eirene incorporates fundamental lace knitting stitches combined with basic decreases to create an elegant openwork pattern. The stitches used include:

  • Knit and purl stitches for foundational fabric
  • Yarn overs to create the lace openings characteristic of decorative shawl knitting
  • K2tog (knit two together) and p2tog (purl two together) for single decreases
  • P3tog (purl three together) for a more pronounced decrease
  • Ssk (slip, slip, knit) for left-leaning decreases that balance k2tog decreases
  • Central double decrease for creating defined stitch pattern elements

This combination of stitches creates a balanced lace pattern where yarn overs are paired with strategic decreases, allowing the shawl to maintain its shape while showcasing delicate openwork.

Yarn and Materials

Sweet Eirene is designed to be worked in multiple yarn weights, offering flexibility based on desired finished size and drape characteristics.

Version A uses Italian Merino Cashmere DK weight yarn. This version requires three skeins of Italian Merino Cashmere DK in the colorway Messina, with each skein containing 109 yards and weighing 50 grams. DK weight (also called light worsted or 3-ply) is a medium yarn weight that creates a fabric with excellent stitch definition, making it ideal for displaying lace patterns clearly.

Version B uses Manos Del Uruguay Clara Sport weight yarn. This version requires two skeins of Manos Del Uruguay Clara Sport in the colorway Tulum, #33, with each skein containing 385 yards and weighing 100 grams. Sport weight (also called 4-ply) is a lighter yarn weight that produces a more delicate, drapey fabric with finer stitch definition, perfect for creating an airy, flowing shawl.

Needles: US6 (4mm) needles are recommended, or the size needed to obtain the specified gauge. The appropriate needle size ensures proper stitch tension and fabric characteristics.

Gauge: The pattern is worked at a gauge of 24 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions and ensuring the shawl drapes as designed.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to explore lace knitting techniques. The straightforward short row shaping method and combination of basic lace stitches create an approachable project that builds confidence in working with yarn overs and decreases without overwhelming complexity.
