Sweet as Sugar Scarf and Small Shawl by Sarahjanedesigns
Project Overview
Sweet as Sugar is an advanced crochet pattern designed to create either a versatile scarf or small shawl. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Sarah Jane Designs offers flexibility in finished dimensions, allowing crafters to customize the project length by adjusting the number of repeats in the pattern.
What Is Being Made
The Sweet as Sugar pattern produces a delicate, lace-inspired accessory available in two configurations: a scarf or a small shawl. The sample scarf shown in the pattern features 1.5 extra repeats in the length, measuring 8.5 inches wide by 42 inches long after blocking. The design is suitable for both interpretations, giving crafters the creative freedom to decide their preferred finished garment.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern requires 650 yards (600 meters) of yarn. While the pattern is written for 4ply weight yarn, it accommodates flexibility across yarn weights. The sample was created using Colourmart extra fine merino laceweight held 3 strands together, which achieves the equivalent of 4ply weight yarn. Crafters may substitute lace weight, fingering weight, or 4ply weight yarns, provided they adjust hook size and total yardage accordingly to account for variations in finished project size.
Additional materials include a 4.25/4.5mm (US G/7 or UK 7) crochet hook, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and at least 18 removable stitch markers or waste yarn for tracking pattern repeats.
Crochet Stitches Used
- Chain – the foundation stitch for beginning rows and creating openwork sections
- Single Crochet – a fundamental short stitch used throughout the pattern structure
- Half Double Crochet – a medium-height stitch providing texture and drape
- Double Crochet – a taller stitch creating vertical lines and openwork
- Treble Crochet – an extended stitch adding height and lacy qualities
- Puff Stitch – a textured, dimensional stitch creating decorative elements
- Picot – a small decorative loop typically worked at edges for embellishment
- Slip Stitch – used to join rounds and move yarn across stitches without adding height
Techniques and Construction
This advanced-level pattern employs lace-weight crochet techniques to create an open, airy fabric with visual interest. The design incorporates multiple stitch types working together to build texture and decorative elements. Picot details add refined embellishment typical of delicate scarf and shawl designs. The pattern uses repeating motifs that can be extended or shortened to customize the final length, making it adaptable for different preferences.
Blocking is essential to this project—the finished measurements provided (8.5 inches wide by 42 inches long) are taken after blocking, which helps even out the lace pattern and achieve the intended drape and dimensions.
Gauge and Sizing
The stitch gauge measures 17 stitches to 4 inches within the pattern stitch. The first 10 rows of the body section measure 4 inches in length. These gauge measurements are critical for achieving the correct finished dimensions and should be checked before beginning the project.
Pattern Format
Sweet as Sugar is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern written in US crochet terminology. The pattern is authored by Sarah Jane Designs and includes comprehensive instructions for completing either the scarf or small shawl version of this elegant accessory.
