Sweaters in Stylecraft Grace Aran – Pattern 10014: Two Easy Striped Knit Designs

This downloadable PDF pattern from Stylecraft includes instructions for two beginner-friendly Aran-weight sweaters — a Long Sweater and a Short Sweater — both worked in bold, cheerful multicolour stripes using Stylecraft Grace yarn. The pattern is rated easy and is an excellent choice for knitters who are confident with basic techniques but not yet ready for complex stitch work. Both designs are generously sized and inclusive, covering six sizes from 81/86 cm (32/34 in) to 132/137 cm (52/54 in) bust, making this a versatile pattern for a wide range of body types.

Materials Required

Yarn

Both sweaters are knitted in Stylecraft Grace, a 100g Aran-weight ball, used in up to seven colours. The shades specified in the pattern are:

  • A – Ocean 2157
  • B – Evergreen 2158
  • C – Forest 2154
  • D – Long Grass 2153
  • E – Hibiscus 2151
  • F – Marmalade 2159
  • G – Hot Pink 2160

The number of balls required varies by size and by design. For the Long Sweater, colour A requires up to 3 balls in the largest sizes, while colours B, C, E, and G require up to 2 balls. For the Short Sweater, colours B and D require up to 3 balls in the largest sizes. Always check the ball quantities listed in the pattern for your specific size before purchasing.

Needles

  • 4mm knitting needles – used for the ribbed welts
  • 5mm knitting needles – used for the main body worked in garter stitch stripes

The Long Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Long Sweater is a relaxed, longline pullover with a full length ranging from 60 cm (23¾ in) in the smallest size up to 73 cm (28¾ in) in the largest. The actual bust measurement is generously cut, ranging from 92 cm (36¾ in) to 143 cm (57¼ in), providing a comfortable, easy fit. Sleeves are worked to a length of approximately 46–48 cm (18–19 in) depending on size.

Techniques and Construction

The sweater is constructed in separate pieces — back, front, and sleeves — which are then seamed together. Construction begins at the lower edge with a k1, p1 rib welt worked on the smaller 4mm needles, providing a neat, elasticated border. A decrease row is worked at the top of the rib to reduce the stitch count before the main body begins, ensuring a smooth transition and a slightly shaped silhouette.

The main body is then worked on 5mm needles entirely in garter stitch — that is, knitting every row on both right side and wrong side rows. Garter stitch is one of the most beginner-friendly fabrics in knitting: it lies flat, has a pleasing ridged texture, and requires no purling in the main fabric, making it ideal for those building confidence. A marker is placed on the first row of the main body to identify the right side.

Stitch Techniques Used

  • K1, P1 Rib – worked over the welt for stretch and structure
  • Garter Stitch (g-st) – knit every row, forming the entire main body fabric
  • Rib2tog – a simple decrease used in the transition row between rib and main body
  • Multicolour Stripe Sequence – colours are changed in a structured sequence across 112 rows, creating a gradient-like striped effect moving through Ocean, Evergreen
